MOODY AFB: IN-DEPTH WELCOME CENTER
Introduction
Welcome to your new home connected to the 23rd Wing (the Flying Tigers) and 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing at Moody Air Force Base! Moody AFB is located in southern Georgia, just 30 miles north of the Florida border. It’s a great place to live and work. The base employs nearly 4,500 Airmen and joint service members, about 500 civilian personnel and their families. The military installation traces its roots back to 1940 when a group of concerned Valdosta and Lowndes county citizens began searching for a way to assist the expanding defense program. Careful investigation showed that the development of an air corp training base would be the best way to help the program. On May 14, 1941, the War Department was granted exclusive use of 9,300 acres of land where Moody AFB sits today. The installation was named in memory of Maj. George Putnam Moody, an Air Force pioneer killed in May 1941, while serving with the Beech Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas.
