Giddy up and welcome to your new home connected to the 90th Missile Wing at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base! F. E. Warren AFB is one of three strategic-missile bases in the United States and is located on the western edge of Cheyenne, Wyoming. It’s an ideal location as it sits almost directly between Mexico and Canada and has rich Western history. The main base spans almost 6,000 acres and satellite remote missile bases in Nebraska and Colorado add another 12,600 acres to the base’s territory. Over 1,000 men and women in the 90th Mission Support Group provide civil engineering, transportation and logistics, communications, contracting, and support to 29,000 active duty personnel, Reserves, military family members and retirees, including over 4,200 personnel assigned to the missile wing and tenant units. This diverse group supports the nuclear mission while maintaining a robust overseas deployment commitment providing combat capability across the spectrum of conflict. The military installation traces its roots back to 1867 when it was first used by the United States Cavalry and known as Fort Russell, after Civil War hero David Allen Russell. Your sponsor will meet you and assist during your transition to F. E. Warren. Upon arrival, check in with your sponsor and inprocess with your assigned Commander's Support Staff on the first duty day. Hand carry your orders and the sealed records package from your previous military personnel flight for this appointment. Once you have signed into your new unit, the CSS will schedule your Warren Welcome Center inprocessing appointment that will take place within 72 hours. The area around F. E. Warren AFB has four distinct seasons and, at times, rapidly changing weather conditions. Located in a fairly dry region of the country, the base receives about 14 inches of moisture per year in the form of rain or snowmelt and has an average winter snowfall of 52 inches. Snowfall is common nine months out of the year due to the high plains environment. Winter months are usually dry and windy with wind gusts commonly more than 50 mph. Average winter temperatures range from the 30s during the day to teens overnight. Spring and summer seasons are the wettest times of the year with more than two inches of moisture per month from April to July. Severe thunderstorms occur in the late spring to summer months and can result in flash flooding conditions, large hail and even occasional tornadoes.
