Introduction 

Welcome to Aberdeen Proving Ground, a 72,000 acre complex located in Hartford County, Maryland along the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. Established by President Woodrow Wilson on October 20, 1917, Aberdeen Proving Ground hosts more than 19,500 civilians under its employment, more than 1,000 military personnel, and nearly 3,000 contractors and private business employees. From Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI)

  1. Follow Airport Exit signs and take I-195 W.
  2. Take the MD-295/ Baltimore Washington Pkwy North exit
  3. Merge onto MD-295N
  4. Take the I-895/Harbor Tunnel Trwy exit
  5. Merge onto Harbor Tunnel Trwy
  6. Harbor Tunnel Trwy becomes I-95 N (Portions toll)
  7. Take I-95 North to exit 80 (Riverside/Churchville)
  8. Follow MD-543 South for about 1.2 miles to US-40 East
  9. Take US-40 East towards Aberdeen
  10. Exit onto MD-715 and proceed to the 715/Maryland Avenue Gate

From Washington, D.C.

  1. Take I-95 N, I-95 Express Toll and I-95 N to MD-543 S/Riverside Pkwy in Abingdon

Entering Aberdeen Proving Ground and Post Amenities

All drivers on post must have a valid military ID, veterans or retiree ID, a valid driver’s license, and a valid driver’s insurance card. Visitors who do not have official US Government identification must enter through the Visitor Center at the MD-715 Gate (Maryland Ave). Photo identification, vehicle registration, and building number of your destination are required at the Visitor Center in order to obtain a Visitor Badge.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Permanent Party new arrivals will report to the Military Personnel Office at 8:00 the first duty day of arrival. In order to sign in you must have: five copies of your orders; any applicable military leave paperwork; any updates DEERS/RAPIDS where applicable for births, marriage, or divorce en route to APG; your 201 File; your original and DA Form 31; all necessary documentation to complete Officer/Enlisted Records Brief and iPERMS Audit; and your Request and Authority for Leave Form. Additionally, in order to complete your in-processing you are required to have your medical and dental records, finance receipts and paperwork, as well as a proper military uniform.

Aberdeen has several desirable, family-friendly neighborhoods for those who are stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground. These neighborhoods are only a short drive to post and offer a variety of reasonably priced rentals and homes for sale.

Baltimore

Some people may prefer the city life and choose to live a little farther from the post in Baltimore. Baltimore is still within an hour’s drive of Aberdeen Proving Ground, and although the commute is a longer drive than the neighborhoods of Aberdeen, Baltimore boasts a wide array of restaurants, sports venues, museums, concert venues, and a whole lot more. There are no schools on post at Aberdeen Proving Ground. However, children living on APG North will either attend Roye-Williams Elementary, Aberdeen Middle School or Aberdeen High School. Children living on APG South or Edgewood Area will attend Edgewood Elementary, Edgewood Middle or Edgewood High School. The weather around Aberdeen Proving Ground sees a wide range of temperatures throughout the year. The months of May, June, and September boast the most pleasant weather conditions. July is the hottest month of the year in the area, with high temperatures averaging around 87.4 degrees. February is generally the snowiest month of the year, with snowfall averaging 6.3 inches.
