Introduction

Welcome to Camp Allen Marine Base, located in Norfolk, Virginia. Camp Allen is a satellite base of Naval Station Norfolk, considered to be its southern annex, located near the downtown center of the city. The base is 15 acres, with about 1,400 personnel serving on base. Camp Allen is named after the CEC Captain Walter H. Allen, who founded the naval construction regiment during WWI.   1. Take I-64 E.
  2. Take exit 276 to merge onto I-564 W toward the Naval Base.

Flights to Camp Allen

Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is only about 15 minutes from Camp Allen. This hub, which serves much of the Southeast, is where you’ll more than likely fly in. It has all the amenities you would expect from an international airport, with a lounge for active and retired military personnel.

Entering Camp Allen and Base Amenities

When you first arrive at Camp Allen, you’ll need to visit the Welcome Center off of Yalu Street. Every driver on base needs to have a valid military, Veteran, or retiree ID, along with a valid driver’s license and insurance card.

Check-In Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Every military personnel reporting for duty at Camp Allen must head to the Welcome Center to begin the check-in process. It’s here where you can receive the visitor’s pass that you will need to keep on you at all times while on the installation. In-processing will continue through your assigned unit at Camp Allen. Here are a few of the things you’ll need to keep handy for your check-in: transfer orders, your losing posting, documentation for any dependents, mandates, travel receipts, and your birth certificate. Keeping those handy will make the process go smoothly.

Major Cities Near Camp Allen

Camp Allen is a part of the greater complex that makes up Naval Station Norfolk. The sprawling installation is in the middle of the metropolitan area that includes the city of Norfolk and surrounding cities. You’ll have many options for places to live that are conveniently located near Camp Allen and other major amenities, like Amtrak Stations and the Norfolk International Airport.

Best Places To Live Near Camp Allen

The city of Norfolk, VA, will be your most obvious choice to find a place to live near Camp Allen. It has strong ties to the military community there, where you’ll be warmly welcomed. You’ll have access to waterfront property along the miles of shoreline there, where you can view ships going in and out of the harbor. Hampton, VA, is home to the world’s first bridge-tunnel – the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel – that was built and eventually opened in 1957. It crosses the channel to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean for access to the harbor. This city also is the home of Langley Air Force Base and is the sixth most populated city in Virginia. You’ll be on the other side of the bay from Camp Allen and must take the bridge to get to base, but you’ll still only be about 16 miles or so away. The most populous city in Virginia goes to Virginia Beach. Here, you'll be located right up against the Atlantic Ocean with plenty of things to do in this resort city. You’ll be a little more remote from Camp Allen but still within 20 miles of the base. You’ll find a thriving community here if you decide to call Virginia Beach home.

camp allen school Camp Allen has a few options for schooling and youth care on base and is surrounded by plenty of other choices in the area that can meet your student’s needs. Camp Allen Elementary is located right on base and is within the Norfolk Public Schools District. Secondary schools are off-site, but transportation is available for all the major schools nearby. During the summer months, you’ll have your pick of a few recreation camps and services. Camp Allen Weather

beach pier At this posting, you’ll have a wide range of weather experiences throughout the year. Summers are hot and muggy, while the winters are known to get very cold and windy. Summer highs will be hovering around 90 degrees, while the average in winter sits around freezing, even dipping into the 20s. There's usually plenty of rain and cloud cover over the course of the year, with snowfall typically seen from the end of December to early March.
