Goodfellow Air Force Base: In-Depth Welcome Center (2022 Edition)

Welcome to Goodfellow Air Force Base! The base traces its roots all the way back to 1940 during the military buildup that preceded World War II and was built as the San Angelo Air Corps Basic Flying School. The base produced more than 10,000 pilots throughout the war and continued producing flyers afterward. The base transitioned to training intelligence specialists and eventually Air Education and Training Command was established and the mission grew to develop firefighters, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance professionals.

Today Goodfellow AFB covers more than 1,235 acres and has a population of about 5,500, half of whom are students.

Goodfellow AFB Weather

Goodfellow AFB Weather

Central Texas can get really hot and somewhat muggy. The winter is short and chilly but temperatures rarely ever drop below the mid-30s in the morning and are around 60 during the day. Spring is pleasant with mornings in the 50s and the days in the high 70s to mid 80s. Summer is hot and fairly humid with temperatures ranging from high 60s in the morning and up to 100 in the hottest part of the day. Early summer in May to June is the rainiest time of year. It’s usually mostly sunny to partly cloudy all year and the winds are generally out of the South. For time in the field, you’ll want to dress in layers to shed during the winter and stay well hydrated and wear lots of sunscreen in the summer.
