On-Base Commissary Delivery Puts Groceries on Your Doorstep

The commissary military grocery store is well-known to all those who’ve ever lived on a military installation. Getting your groceries isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite pastime. Now, with a new pilot program for commissary delivery at your home, you may not dread grocery shopping anymore!

Commissary Delivery for Groceries Is Long Past Due

Grocery delivery is far from a new concept. HomeGrocer.com was one of the first companies to offer delivery of groceries directly to your door in 1997. Though there were lots of snags in the system at first, many big players initially caught on to the trend as they realized it wasn’t just a fad.

Supermarket giant Walmart got in on the action in late 2019 to try and keep up with the ever-growing competition posed to them by online retail giant Amazon, which started its popular Prime service all the way back in 2005.

The point is that most of the nation, and the world, has been able to buy online and grab groceries at their doorstep without having to leave the house for many years. But military installations have been well behind the curve.

Click2Go Commissary Grocery Pickup Isn’t Cutting It

In the past, the most convenient way to get your groceries, sans doing it the old-fashioned way, was the military’s worldwide Click2Go program. This program works the same as any other grocery pickup service from your favorite grocery chains, like Target and Walmart. You order online, set up a time for pickup, and grab your purchases curbside.

Bill Moore, CEO/director of the Defense Commissary Agency, recognizes that the influx of younger service members means that his agency needs to push for even more convenience, which is where commissary delivery comes in.

“We learned from our focus group of new young, single enlisted service members that they value convenience as much as their savings, and they want low-cost, healthy options,” Moore stated at the start of the program.

Who Gets Commissary Delivery?

Currently, eight installations are a part of the pilot program, which began on June 1 and runs through the end of the month:

  • Fort Belvoir
  • Fort Bragg
  • Fort Lewis
  • MacDill Air Force Base
  • Marine Corps Air Station Miramar
  • Naval Station San Diego
  • Norfolk Naval Station
  • Scott Air Force Base

If the pilot program proves successful, the long-term goal is to provide commissary grocery delivery from all commissaries within the continental United States. The delivery will also be available to both on-base and off-base consumers, keeping in mind the large number of service members who reside in housing off of their posting.

What Can I Buy With Commissary Delivery and How Does It Work?

Commissary delivery at participating locations works pretty much the same way as it does everywhere else. On the website, you’ll have access to the commissary’s full range of grocery items, and this includes frozen foods, fresh fruit, vegetables, deli items, bakery goods, and seafood.

Depending on your location and availability, online selections for fresh foods and bakery goods may be limited.

If you live at a participating base and wanna try commissary grocery store delivery, follow these steps to get commissary delivery to your home:

  1. Log on to shop.commissaries.com and click the Click2Go button.
  2. Go through the authentication process, choose your store, and make your grocery selections.
  3. Go to checkout and choose the “Delivery” option.
  4. Input your address.
  5. Select a two-hour delivery window that’s best for you. (This time cannot be closer than three to four hours away).
  6. The system will inform you if your address and selected delivery time are available. If not, you’ll go in and make new selections.
  7. Pay for your order, including the 5% surcharge, delivery fees, and driver tip.
  8. Wait for your groceries to arrive!

We have a good feeling that the commissary delivery pilot program is gonna be a huge success. If you’re not currently at a participating installation, keep an eye out for news about nationwide commissary delivery coming your way (hopefully) soon!
