SHEPPARD AFB HOUSING: 3 ON-BASE OPTIONS

Introduction

Welcome to Sheppard Air Force Base (AFB), located just outside of the town of Wichita Falls along the Texas-Oklahoma border. Here you’ll experience wide open spaces and prairie life. When moving to a new duty station, if you’re not sure you want to buy a house in the local area or the time simply isn’t right for you, on-base housing is always a great option. This guide will help you figure out your options and get you started.

Sheppard AFB BAH

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is provided for you based on your rank and location. BAH is given if housing on-base is not available and you are looking at living in the surrounding area. Sheppard AFB Barracks

Unaccompanied personnel can find housing through the Unaccompanied Housing office. Unaccompanied Airmen in the ranks of E1-E3 and E-4 with fewer than 3 years of service are eligible for a residence that includes private sleeping rooms, linens, furnishings, and supplies. Contact your gaining unit and request to be assigned a sponsor who can assist you in registering for housing.

Sheppard AFB Housing Office

To apply for Sheppard AFB base family housing, contact the Military Housing Office as soon as you receive your orders to Sheppard. The MHO team can inform you of the process and notify you of current wait times for housing, if any. Housing on-base is a public-private partnership with Balfour Beatty Communities. The Air Force manages your housing application and the waitlist. The Privatized Managing Partner manages the lease signing, property management, and meeting the residents’ needs.

Sheppard Air Force Base Housing Options

There are three distinct neighborhoods on Sheppard AFB with various floor plans and amenities. The community is entirely pet friendly including large breed dogs though there are some restrictions on numbers and breeds.

Sheppard AFB Housing Amenities

  • Dog park

  • Neighborhood center with multipurpose room

Note:

Even though some neighborhoods may include all ranks, only certain units within that neighborhood may be available to certain ranks. Though some neighborhoods are open to all ranks, certain floor plans may be restricted to those of higher rank.

1. Freedom Estates

Ranks:

E1-E6, Military Retirees, DOD civilian employees This neighborhood comprises three and four bedroom homes with fully equipped kitchens, master suites, and fenced in yards. The neighborhood is located across from the Sheppard Hospital Gate and in walking distance of the John Tower Elementary School.

2. Heritage Heights

Ranks:

E1-E6 This neighborhood features two and three bedroom homes with a fully equipped kitchen, breakfast bar, garage, and ample storage space. The neighborhood is located near the Base Clinic, Commissary, and Exchange.

3. Wind Creek Village

Ranks:

E7-E9, O1-O7 This neighborhood features three and four bedroom homes with master suites, walk-in closets, two car garage, and fenced in backyard. The neighborhood is located near the community center, Sheppard Elementary School, the Commissary, Base Exchange, and Base Clinic.

Conclusion

If you’re not sure you’d like to invest in buying a house, the time simply isn’t right for you, or you’d prefer the security of housing managed by the military, base housing is the best choice for you. The Sheppard AFB area is quite sparse and open outside of Wichita Falls so the convenience of base housing is an excellent choice for short commutes and shopping.
