Welcome to Sheppard Air Force Base, home of the 82nd Training Wing and the 80th Flying Training Wing. Located in Wichita Falls, Texas, Sheppard is one of the Air Force’s major training installations and is known as the Air Force’s “Logistics University.”

Sheppard has a long history of preparing Airmen and allied partners for service. Getting to Sheppard AFB From Popular Cities

From Dallas

Take I-35E North toward Denton, then connect to US-287 North toward Wichita Falls. As you get close to Wichita Falls, follow signs toward Sheppard AFB / TX-240 / Burkburnett Road and use GPS for “Sheppard Main Gate.”

From Fort Worth

Take US-287 North straight toward Wichita Falls. Once you reach the Wichita Falls area, follow signs for Sheppard AFB and enter through the Sheppard Main Gate off TX-240/Burkburnett Road and Sheppard Access Road.

From Oklahoma City

Take I-44 West/Southwest toward Lawton and Wichita Falls. Continue across the Texas state line, then take the Sheppard AFB/Missile Road area exit and follow local signs to the Sheppard Main Gate or the Missile Road Gate, which is located directly next to the Sheppard AFB Visitor Center.

Want to Visit Sheppard AFB? Here's How to Get Base Access

Visitors age 16 and older who do not have a DoD-issued photo ID must be sponsored by an eligible DoD ID card holder to receive a visitor pass at the Sheppard AFB Welcome Center. During business hours, visitor passes are processed at the Visitor Control Center on a walk-in basis. Passes may be issued for up to 30 days at the Visitor Control Center or up to 24 hours at the Main Gate after hours.

Visitors should bring a valid, unexpired, REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state-issued photo ID. First-time registration may also require a Social Security card. If your ID is not REAL ID compliant, you may need supporting documents such as a passport, birth certificate, or Social Security card. All visitors are subject to a background check before being granted unescorted access.

Non-U.S. citizens must have a valid reason for entry, a valid passport and visa, and must complete additional screening, including criminal history and AFOSI background checks. Foreign visitor requests require at least 14 business days for processing and generally cannot be sponsored directly by a U.S. citizen or DoD cardholder, except in limited circumstances. What ID Do You Need For Base Access?

To access the installation you are required to present one of the following:

• DoD ID card holders may enter with their valid DoD-issued identification.
• Visitors age 16 and older who do not have a DoD ID will need a visitor pass sponsored by an eligible DoD credential holder.
• Bring a valid, unexpired photo ID, such as a state-issued driver’s license or state ID card.
  • Your driver’s license or state ID should be REAL ID compliant.
    • If your ID is not REAL ID compliant, bring supporting documents, such as a passport, birth certificate, or Social Security card, along with your state-issued photo ID.
• First-time visitor registration may require a Social Security card, so bring it with you if you are requesting base access for the first time.
• Non-U.S. citizens must bring a valid passport and visa, have a valid reason for entry, and complete additional screening before receiving a visitor pass.
• All visitors should be prepared for a background check before being granted unescorted access.

Gates & Hours of Operation

Sheppard AFB Welcome Center keeps base access fairly simple: the Main Gate is your go-to 24/7 entrance, the Missile Road Gate handles weekday traffic and visitor access, and the Hospital Gate is currently closed.

The Main Gate

The Sheppard AFB Main Gate is on Sheppard Access Road, right off TX-240/Burkburnett Road, on the southwest side of the base. It’s the 24-hour gate and Google maps has it labeled as “Sheppard Main Gate.”

The Missile Road Gate

The Missile Road Gate is located directly next to the Sheppard AFB Visitor Center at 210 Missile Road, Sheppard AFB, TX 76311. This gate can only be accessed Monday-Friday 0600-1730.

New Arrivals/In-Processing

When arriving at Sheppard AFB, your first step is to follow your unit’s reporting instructions and check in with your sponsor, CSS, or gaining unit. If you arrive after duty hours or on a weekend, Sheppard AFB directs newcomers to report to the 24-hour arrival point at the Sheppard Inn and then report to their unit’s UPC/CSS the next duty day. Temporary lodging is available through the Sheppard Inn, and PCS families are encouraged to make reservations early.

Newly assigned military members are also required to attend Sheppard Right Start, the installation’s mandatory newcomer orientation. Right Start is normally scheduled through your unit CSS and gives newcomers information about base services, local resources, safety, housing, medical care, and support programs. Spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Be sure to hand-carry important documents such as orders, IDs, medical records, school records, housing paperwork, and travel receipts so you have what you need during in-processing.

Sheppard AFB Amenities & Facilities

Once settled at Sheppard AFB, there are a few base amenities and facilities worth knowing.

Medical Center

The 82nd Medical Group, also known as the Sheppard Clinic, provides on-base medical care for eligible beneficiaries. Services include primary care, pediatrics, pharmacy, lab and X-ray, dental, optometry, mental health, immunizations, women’s health, and other support services. The clinic does not have an emergency room or urgent care, so emergencies should go through 911 or the nearest emergency room.

Housing Office

Unaccompanied Housing

For many Airmen arriving at Sheppard AFB, Unaccompanied Housing is more than just a place to sleep; it is their first home on base. UH is designed to provide eligible unaccompanied Airmen, typically E-1 to E-3 and E-4 with less than three years of service, with a comfortable, functional living space that supports training, professionalism, and day-to-day life. Each Airman is generally provided a private sleeping room with furnishings, linens, and basic supplies.

At Sheppard AFB, military family housing is privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities. Families can choose to rent or buy in the local community, or apply to live in privatized housing on base through a tenant lease agreement with BBC. As soon as you know you are headed to Sheppard, contact the Military Housing Office so they can walk you through current housing options, availability, and the application process before you make a decision.

Where Should I Live?

If you are considering living off base, the Military Housing Office is a great place to start once you get past the Sheppard AFB Welcome Center. The MHO helps DoD personnel understand the local housing market, review housing options, and connect with landlords, realtors, and property managers in the Wichita Falls area. They can also assist with lease questions, military release clauses, relocation support, and landlord or resident concerns.

Wichita Falls and the surrounding communities offer a variety of apartments, rental homes, and homes for sale, with options ranging from studios and lofts to larger family homes. Apartments may start around $500 and up, while three-bedroom rental homes are popular and may start around $1,100 and up; four-bedroom homes are often around $1,400 and up. Before signing a lease or buying a home, be sure to factor in housing allowance, insurance, taxes, and personal property coverage so you have a clear picture of the full cost of living off base.

On-Base Housing

On-base housing at Sheppard AFB includes privatized family housing through Balfour Beatty Communities and Unaccompanied Housing for eligible single service members. Families can explore Sheppard AFB Homes neighborhoods such as Freedom Estates, Heritage Heights, and Wind Creek Village, while eligible unaccompanied Airmen should work with the Unaccompanied Housing Office for room assignments and requirements.

Freedom Estates Office

Freedom Estates is a privatized housing neighborhood at Sheppard AFB offering three- and four-bedroom homes with two to two-and-a-half bathrooms. Homes include features such as fully equipped kitchens and primary suites, making this neighborhood a practical option for families looking for on-base living.

The community is open to eligible residents including E-1 through E-6 service members, military retirees, DoD civilian employees, and the general public. Families in Freedom Estates can enjoy nearby amenities such as sport courts and a playground, plus a convenient location across from the Sheppard Hospital Gate and within walking distance of John Tower Elementary School.

Heritage Heights

Heritage Heights is a privatized housing neighborhood at Sheppard AFB offering two- and three-bedroom homes with one to two bathrooms. This neighborhood is available to eligible E-1 through E-6 service members and provides a convenient on-base living option close to everyday essentials.

Located near the Base Clinic, Commissary, and Exchange, Heritage Heights offers floor plans with practical features such as fully equipped kitchens with breakfast bars, garages, and ample storage space. For families who want easy access to key base amenities, this neighborhood is a helpful option to explore.

Wind Creek Village

Wind Creek Village is a privatized housing neighborhood at Sheppard AFB offering three- and four-bedroom homes with two to three-and-a-half bathrooms. This neighborhood is available to eligible E-7 through E-9 and O-1 through O-7 service members.

Homes in Wind Creek Village include features such as a primary suite with a walk-in closet, two-car garage, and fenced-in backyard. The neighborhood is located near the community center and offers convenient access to amenities such as a pool, fitness room, and playgrounds, with Sheppard Elementary School, the Commissary, Base Exchange, and Base Clinic all nearby.

Off-Base Housing & Military Preferred Living Areas

Sometimes finding off-base housing can feel like putting the cart before the horse, especially if you are also trying to choose a school district, plan a commute, stay within BAH, or find specific amenities. Before you fall in love with a rental or neighborhood, it helps to think through what matters most for your family: schools, drive time to the gate, pets, yard space, walkability, lease terms, and access to shopping, medical care, or childcare.

As a military community, we know planning ahead can make a PCS feel a little less overwhelming. One helpful planning factor is understanding the local cost of living, especially when it comes to housing. Realtor.com provides up-to-date market information for the surrounding area, including median listing home price, median sold home price, and median rental rate, which can help families get a better sense of what to expect before arriving at Sheppard AFB.

These numbers are a helpful starting point, but they can change with the market and may vary depending on the neighborhood, home size, lease terms, and availability. Burkburnett

If you want to live close to Sheppard AFB without feeling like you are living directly on base, Burkburnett neighborhoods may be worth a look. Originally settled by ranchers, the town was named after Samuel Burk Burnett and grew rapidly after oil was discovered nearby in 1912, helping shape the community’s “Boomtown” identity. Located just north of the installation, this small-town community offers a practical mix of nearby schools, local parks, a public library, an aquatic center, city services, and everyday conveniences.

Henrietta

The City of Henrietta offers a quieter, small-town option southeast of Wichita Falls, but it does come with a longer commute to Sheppard AFB. Most drives from Henrietta to the base are roughly 25–35 minutes, so families should weigh the extra travel time against housing options, school preferences, and the feel of the community before deciding if it is the right fit.

Iowa Park

Iowa Park is a small North Texas community west of Wichita Falls that may appeal to families looking for a quieter off-base option near Sheppard AFB. The city describes itself as a safe, family-friendly community with a small-town atmosphere, good schools, and plenty of recreation, including three lakes, parks, a library, swimming pool, spray park, and public events.

For military families, Iowa Park can be a good “close enough, but not too close” option: you still have access to Wichita Falls and Sheppard AFB, but with a little more small-town breathing room.

Ideally, you can use the Housing Early Assistance Tool (HEAT) before you arrive to the Sheppard AFB Welcome Center to start connecting with the housing office and get a head start on your housing plan. Lining up housing early can help you avoid some of the stress that comes with needing temporary lodging after a long PCS move.

That said, military life and PCS season can be unpredictable, and it is easy for timelines to shift. If you arrive at Sheppard AFB and still need a temporary place to stay, start with the Sheppard Inn for on-base lodging, then compare the nearby hotels or extended-stay options listed below in Wichita Falls based on availability, pet policies, kitchen access, laundry, and distance to the gate.

Sheppard Inn

The Sheppard Inn is the on-base Air Force lodging option for those arriving at Sheppard AFB and needing temporary accommodations. It can be a convenient place to stay while waiting for housing, finalizing move-in details, or getting settled after a PCS.
