Base Essentials
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is a joint Navy and Air Force installation on Oahu, Hawaii, created October 1, 2010, when Naval Station Pearl Harbor merged with Hickam Air Force Base. It is home to more than 175 tenant commands, 11 ships, 18 submarines, and six fixed-wing aviation squadrons. Attack on Hickam Field
On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft struck Hickam, Wheeler and Bellows fields, destroying or damaging the majority of the Hawaiian Air Force aircraft on the ground.
1947
Air Force Independence
Following the formation of the Air Force as a separate branch of the Department of Defense in 1947, Air Transport Command and later the Military Air Transport Service assumed control of Air Force activities in Hawaii.
1956
Pacific Air Forces Headquarters
Far East Air Forces relocated from Japan to Hickam and was redesignated Headquarters, Pacific Air Forces — establishing Hickam as the Pacific air component command.
2010
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Created
On October 1, 2010, Hickam Air Force Base merged with the former Naval Station Pearl Harbor to form Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam under the 2005 BRAC.
