Yokota Air Base is the premier logistics hub in the Indo-Pacific theater, home to the 374th Airlift Wing and host to Headquarters, United States Forces Japan and Fifth Air Force. Its mission is to maneuver and sustain forces at the speed of need, serving as the primary airlift hub for peacetime and contingency operations across the region with C-130J and C-12J aircraft. As the only airlift wing in the Indo-Pacific, it moves passengers, cargo, and mail throughout the area of responsibility.

1940
Tama Army Airfield opens
The Imperial Japanese Army opened the base in March 1940, called Tama Army Airfield (also referred to locally as Fussa Army Airfield). Its missions were test flying newly designed Army aircraft and training Army Air Force maintenance personnel.
1945
American forces take control
On Sept. 4, 1945, American forces arrived and took charge of weapons and base security; on Sept. 6, 1945, the base was turned over to American Occupation Forces and became an air cargo installation.
1950
Korean War combat operations from Yokota
From 1950 to 1953, Headquarters Far East Air Forces Bomber Command and the 98th Bomb Wing flew combat operations over Korea from Yokota AB.
1974
Fifth Air Force headquarters moves to Yokota
In 1974, Fifth Air Force headquarters moved from Fuchu Air Station to Yokota AB. Under the 1970-1974 Kanto Plain Consolidation Program the base became the Pacific hub for strategic airlift.
1989
374th Tactical Airlift Wing transfers to Yokota
The 374th Tactical Airlift Wing transferred from Clark Air Base, Philippines, to Yokota AB in October 1989.
1992
374th Airlift Wing becomes host wing
On April 1, 1992, the 374th Tactical Airlift Wing was redesignated the 374th Airlift Wing, transferred from Air Mobility Command to Pacific Air Forces, and became the host unit at Yokota AB.
2003
C-9 Nightingale aeromedical mission ends
On Sept. 12, 2003, the C-9 Nightingale aeromedical evacuation mission ended; the 30th Airlift Squadron was inactivated Sept. 24, 2003, and the 374th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron moved to Kadena Air Base.
2011
Operation Tomodachi / Great East Japan earthquake response
Following the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan, Yokota served as the logistical center for USAF relief operations, launching more than 370 sorties.
2025
UH-1N Huey retired
The 459th Airlift Squadron flew its last UH-1N Huey sortie in August 2025; the squadron operates the C-12J Huron.

Visitors are processed at the Fussa Visitor Center, open Mon-Fri 3 p.m.-10 p.m. and weekends/holidays/family days 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Pass & Registration (Bldg 993) is open Mon-Fri 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Military & Family Readiness Center (M&FRC), 374th Force Support Squadron, Yokota Air Base
Hours
Mon-Thu 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Fri 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (closed last Friday monthly for training)
In-Processing
Newcomers attend orientation at the Military and Family Readiness Center in Building 535, next to the Base Exchange. Coordinate closely with your assigned sponsor and unit so they are aware of your arrival; sponsors are assigned by the gaining unit upon assignment notification and meet you on arrival, take you to your unit check-in point, and introduce you to the M&FRC. Newcomer's Orientation provides base in-processing, mandatory briefings and community resource information for military members and civilian employees. Orientation is held every Wednesday at the M&FRC in Building 535; registration is required by calling DSN 315-225-8725 or emailing 374fssfsfr@us.af.mil. A driving-in-Japan course runs on Wednesdays and requires separate registration with SFS Reports & Analysis in Building 316.

Where To Live
Yokota Air Base is located on the island of Honshu, Japan, on the Kanto Plain, 28 miles northwest of Tokyo at the foothills of the Okutama Mountains. The base lies within the political boundaries of six municipalities: Akishima, Fussa, Hamura, Mizuho, Musashi-Murayama, and Tachikawa. The cost of living in the off-base community can be expensive, particularly when moving into a rental property. The base sits within the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, which is spread over three prefectures.
