Welcome to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, a world-class patient care facility in Maryland. Walter Reed is a military academic health center that provides care to military personnel and families in the National Capital Region.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center opened in 2011 after the Base Realignment and Closure Act closed the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Naval Support Activity Bethesda is home to the Walter Reed Medical Center. It is responsible for supporting the medical center and more than 40 other tenant commands and activities, including the Uniformed Services University, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Armed Forces Blood Program, Naval Dosimetry Center, Soldier Recovery Brigade, Navy Medicine Readiness & Training Command, and Fisher House Bethesda.

  • Gate 2, South Gate: South Wood Road, open 0500 to 1800 Monday through Friday for inbound and outbound traffic.
  • Gate 3, NEX Gate: Gunnel Road, open 0500 to 0800 Monday through Friday for inbound and outbound traffic and 1300 to 1900 Monday through Friday for outbound traffic.
  • Gate 4, Navy Lodge Gate: Grier Road, currently closed.
  • Gate 5, University Gate: University Road.

Walter Reed Medical Center Weather

Maryland has hot, muggy summers and cold winters. In the summer, Bethesda sees the mercury climb to the high 80s. In the winter, temperatures can dip down to the 20s, which means snow and icy rain are definite possibilities. Bethesda gets about 9 inches of snow and nearly 32 inches of rain each year.
