The History of Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam came to be after a realignment within the military merging the bases into JBPHH as we know them today.
Serving as part of Navy Region Hawaii, the base is home to the Headquarters US Pacific Fleet, including submarine and surface forces, Pacific Air Forces, the 15th Air Wing, the 154th Air Wing, and Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command.
JBPHH has a population of more than 19,000 active duty members as well as over 22,000 family members and 12,700 retirees.
Located on the south side of the Hawaiian island of O'ahu, the base sits in a harbor known as Wai-momi, which butts up against the west side of the city of Honolulu.
Construction of the base began shortly after the turn of the 20th century as a base to project naval power forward across the Pacific and protect American shipping interests in the Far East.

The Army Air Corps knew it needed an airfield in Hawaii and in 1934, the Quartermaster Corps began transforming 2,200 acres of O'ahu into Hickam AFB.
This was a challenging task as the site is a coral reef with minimal soil on top, yet the Army was up to the task and nestled the base near Pearl Harbor between the Waianae and Koolau mountain ranges.
Named after Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam, the base officially welcomed the first units on site in September 1937 before opening up a year later.
Hickam AFB became integral to national defense and was the only facility capable of housing and maintaining B-17 bombers.
The base’s history was forever changed when 139 were killed and 303 wounded due to Imperial Japan’s attack to start WWII for America.
During the war, Hickam AFB was an important facility for training, assembling aircraft, and providing supplies throughout the Pacific Theatre.
Beyond WWII, Hickam Air Force Base also played critical roles in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
The installation has participated in various missions around the world and even assisting NASA over the decades.
In 1980, Hickam AFB was designated as a National Historic Landmark and today, it continues to help protect the United States throughout the Pacific and beyond.
The offerings of Hickam’s 15th Services Squadron and Navy Region Hawaii’s Morale Welfare and Recreation have transitioned and operate as Joint Base MWR.
Likewise, the programs of Hickam’s Airman & Family Readiness Center and Navy Region’s Military & Family Support Center have united to become the Military and Family Support Center.
Pearl Harbor Naval Base History
Since 1908, Naval Station Pearl Harbor has been a staple of the island of O'ahu. Efforts in the next few decades created a base capable of handling the largest ships in the U.S. Navy.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet being brought over to defend against Japan in 1940, would remain permanently before the infamous attack on December 7, 1941, which threw America into WWII.
While more than 2,400 people were killed and 21 ships damaged, all but three vessels would be repaired and re-enter service.
Over the next few decades, Pearl Harbor would play a major role in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Today, the 13,000-14,000+ acre base is the most visited site in all of Hawaii, drawing over 2 million visitors per year as the site of the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri, and the USS Bowfin.
Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam in its current form came to be after a realignment in 2010 to better meet the military’s operational needs.

Getting There - Directions to the Base

All new personnel should be assigned a sponsor who, upon their arrival, will meet them at baggage claim at the airport and have arranged transportation to the base.

The JBPHH DMV takes some of the pain away by providing service members and their families with an easily accessible officer for their needs. Here are a few important things to remember:
- You must make an appointment as walk-ins aren’t allowed. Make your appointment online by clicking the link and remember that you can schedule up to 6 weeks in advance.
- You can only complete one transaction per appointment.
- Only cash or checks are accepted, no credit or debit cards.

Security personnel at the gates will conduct 100% ID checks and all guests must be escorted by a sponsor with a valid DOD ID.
For UNESCORTED access to the base, non-DOD workers/guests must complete and submit SECNAV Form 5512/1 and JB2 0-180 via their sponsor.

Transportation Service Companies or rideshare programs such as UBER, Lyft, taxis, and shuttles must have a locally issued DBIDS card displayed. Rideshare delivery services such as UBER Eats or Instacart are not authorized on base.
Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel
New personnel will be given a sponsor prior to arriving on the island who will meet them at the airport and assist in transportation to the base.
All sponsors will be met at the baggage claim area of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Single personnel will check into the Hawaii Regional Unaccompanied Housing Administration Office at Gabrunas Hall, Bldg 1323 for enlisted personnel and BOH Central Assignments in Lockwood Hall for officers
Air Force personnel with less than three years of service (E1-E4) will be assigned to a dormitory.
Ensure you notify your sponsor to reserve you a room for your arrival. For questions on dormitory assignments, call 1 (808) 448-2007.
Married Personnel will stay at an approved TLA hotel of their choice until they make other arrangements.
Your sponsor is responsible for assisting you in making a hotel reservation prior to your arrival, however, be sure to give your sponsor your itinerary ahead of time.
Prior to checking into housing or dormitories, you will need to get your orders stamped at Building 150 Quarterdeck.
Your sponsor is responsible for alerting the command of your arrival and bringing you to check-in.
While checking in, you are advised to hand-carry the following documents:

Hickam AFB Vet Clinic
The Veterinary Treatment Facility is the premier healthcare facility for your pets on base.

Cities Near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam
JBPHH sits right up against Honolulu and Pearl City . There are a number of small communities and neighborhoods between the two which offer off-base housing options.
O'ahu only takes an hour to cross so you could conceivably live almost anywhere on it and have a commute of less than an hour excluding the North Shore:
Honolulu
Offering a healthy job market, fresh markets, and a variety of cultures, you’re going to pay a premium to live here, but it’s one of the most desired cities in all of Hawaii to call home.
Pearl City
The cost of living is slightly if not simply on par with Honolulu, however, housing is also more expensive than its neighboring city.
Still, Pearl City offers good schools, modern amenities, and a great balance of suburban lifestyles families love.
Mililani
In Mililani, you may be a bit farther from the beach than some areas but the opportunity for recreation is still widely available. Families can enjoy hiking, playgrounds, parks, and rec centers throughout the community.
Aiea
Just north of JBPHH, Aiea offers families great access to recreation, an easy commute, and a mix of the beauty of the island while still maintaining access to modern amenities with ease.
Can Civilians Live on Hickam AFB?
Yes, many civilians call Hickam AFB home already. There are housing units for approved civilians that may become available, though like the rest of Hawaii, expect to pay more for housing than you would typically pay anywhere else in the country.

Elementary, Middle, and High Schools
There are five main schools for families stationed at JBPHH which are broken down as follows:
- For children in elementary school, Mokulele, Hickam, and Nimitz campuses are available. Each elementary school is on base.
- Aliamanu Middle and Radford High School are also available, however, these campuses are off-base.
The state of Hawaii is unique in that it is the only US state that has a statewide school system divided by regions or “complex areas.”
Students must attend their complex school or must apply to attend elsewhere.
Though it may vary depending on a number of factors, there is a 26.5 to 1 student-teacher ratio.
For families looking for private school options, there are several in the area.
Applying looks different for each school, however, it’s typically necessary to apply, starting with the fall before the previous school year, and requires either a Secondary School Admission Test or a previous report card along with an interview.
Adult Education
For those serving at JBPHH, adult education classes are available at the McKinley Community School for Adults (MCSA) and Moanalua High School.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Weather
Being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean at a latitude similar to the Caribbean, you can expect warm, yet pleasant, tropical weather all year round.
Winter low temperatures are in the mid-60s and highs are around 79 °F. The winter months average a little more rain yet the day holds less average humidity than the late summer months.
Summer is warm with low temperatures averaging in the low 70s and high temperatures up around 90 °F.
Keep in mind that Hawaii experiences an annual rainy season from November to March that is typically not too much more involved than the rest of the months with slightly more rainy days than the “off-season.”
The winds entirely depend on what side of the island you are on. JBPHH is situated in the southern protected harbor which means light winds and good surf nearby in Waikiki.
On the North Shore, you can expect much more windy with stronger tides which are famous for creating the huge waves which were the genesis for the sport of big-wave surfing.
Hawaii is called Paradise due in part to its beautiful weather, however, there are days in which one side of the island may be beautiful while the other side is facing much more rainy conditions.
But even Paradise is subject to natural disasters, including a handful of annual tropical cyclones and hurricane threats from June 1 to November 30 each year.
Furthermore, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions are possibilities for residents. Fortunately, no major tsunami damage has affected the Aloha State since 1960.
Our advice? Enjoy the sun, surf, and near-perfect weather you’ll experience more often than not. Pay attention to announcements from local authorities and enjoy everything island life has to offer.
Things to Do on JBPHH
It’s no secret that Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam offers some of the best, most unique recreational opportunities of any military installation. Here are a few great ways to enjoy your stay in Paradise:Surfing and Diving
Of course, surfing and diving are some of the most iconic activities in Hawaii.
There is Aaron’s Dive Shop in Kailua where you can do shore or charter boat dives and a hundred places where you can rent a surfboard and take a lesson in the perfect longboard waves of Waikiki.
Big wave surfing and more aggressive surf breaks are all over the North Shore, and for the more adventurous, there are shark cage dive adventures available from Hawaii Shark Encounter .
But if you’re looking for something nearby, or if you’re new to surfing, Hickam AFB Beach is a great on-base option that provides great beachside access.
You can access the beach at 3455 Mamala Bay Dr, Honolulu, HI 96818, and board rentals along with instructors are available through the JBPHH MWR.
Fishing
While you are sure to find no shortage of fishing opportunities throughout Hawaii, as of 2023, fishing is prohibited on JBPHH.
This is a temporary measure in place due to the discovery of multiple invasive species found throughout the installation.

Golfing at One of Three Hickam AFB Golf Courses
There is a lot to be said about the waves and hiking throughout the state but golfing in Hawaii is an unbelievable experience. Luckily, there are Hickam Air Force Base golf courses available to the military community.
Navy-Marine Golf Course
If you’re stationed at Pearl Harbor, this course is only a mile away. Best of all? It’s ranked within the top 10 military courses worldwide.
You’ll find an 18-hole championship course accompanied by a pro shop and PGA professionals to help you elevate your game. There is also a driving range and practice area.

Mamala Bay Golf Course
Of all of the options for golfing at JBPHH, the Mamala Bay Golf Course is the best for things outside of golf.
Sure, there is an 18-hole championship golf course and PGA professionals available, but the views of the Pacific Ocean and Lēʻahi aka Diamond Head are what truly make this space so special.

Hickam AFB Officers Club
You’ll find the Historic Hickam Officers' Club along the waterfront, also hosting Koa Lounge and Joint Base Caterings who call the facility home.
This is a landmark institution for the military staying at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam known for its relaxed atmosphere and Sunday brunch.
Sadly, as of this writing, the Hickam Air Force Base Officers Club is closed but the good news is that this is only temporary.

At the 735th Air Mobility Squadron Passenger Terminal, you’ll find the Space A program awaiting service members and their families.
Space A travel is a popular way to travel for free with the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam location providing frequent flights throughout the Pacific Theater and CONUS/Alaska.
Additionally, once per week, you can find flights to Alice Springs/Richmond, Australia to explore the Land Down Under.

Not only to determine when your flight is leaving but it’s important to remember that space is limited and not guaranteed. Here are a few additional considerations you’ll need to remember:
- There is free parking for up to 30 days near the Air Mobility Command's (AMC) passenger terminal for those with a boarding pass but space is limited. Contact the Pax Reps before arriving.
- If you’re traveling, be sure to arrive an hour before your roll call.
- Pack accordingly as there are no lockers.
- Anyone traveling to the CONUS will undergo a screening from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- Loitering in the terminal is not allowed.

How to Get Stationed at Hickam Air Force Base
Living at Hickam AFB is a dream for many Airmen, however, there are no guarantees as to where you’ll be stationed.
With that being said, there are common sense steps you can take to at least increase your chances of getting a PCS to Paradise:
Request the Move
The good news is that the USAF will take your preference into consideration. You can provide the Air Force with five bases you’d like to call home if you have already served.
Airmen can also mention their preferences to higher-ups and if there are openings and if you qualify, you may find yourself PCSing to your dream location.
However, keep in mind that these are requests and the needs of the USAF come first. You may or may not get your assignment but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Stay Alert to the Base’s Needs
If you are working on a career that meets the needs of the current and future operations at the base, you’re going to increase your chances of receiving the PCS you desire.
When you are advancing in your career, if moving to Hickam AFB is an important part of your service, then you’re also going to want to pursue careers and gain experience that can help land you there.

Can You Tour Hickam AFB?
Yes, you can take the Hickam Historical Tour offered through Great Life Hawaii, which typically brings visitors on a tour trolley but may also use a passenger van when it’s undergoing maintenance.
You’ll need to either be a DoD ID cardholder or a sponsored guest to attend the tour which also includes lunch and takes place on Fridays.
You can learn more online but expect to visit the original buildings of the installation, still bearing bullet holes from WWII, the Garden City, and more.
