Introduction

Welcome to NAS North Island! Located at the north end of Coronado Peninsula on the San Diego Bay, NAS North Island is the home port of several of the Navy’s aircraft carriers, including the USS Carl Vinson, USS Abraham Lincoln, and USS Miguel Keith (ESB-5). Naval Station North Island is part of Naval Base Coronado – the largest aerospace-industrial complex in the U.S. Navy. NAS North Island is home to several tenant commands and squadrons. There are around 35,000 active-duty military, selected reserve military, and civilian personnel on base. The closest airport to base is San Diego International Airport, located just three miles from NAS North Island.

Driving Directions

  1. All highways leading to the base are well-marked.
  2. Take Interstate 5 through Imperial Beach.
  3. Keep right onto State Highway 75.
  4. Follow State Highway 75 to NAS North Island.

NAS North Island: Entering & Amenities

Personnel entering the base for the first time, as well as guests, will have to check in with the Administration Department. Click here for more information on the Administration Department at NAS North Island.

Check-In Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Sailors reporting for in-processing at NAS North Island should check in with the command they were assigned. Personnel stationed at NAS North Island will report to the Main Gate, also known as Gate 1, which is located at the intersection of Third and Alameda Blvd. Those who need to reach the Administration Department office may call 1 (619) 545-8164 / 8175, or call the Duty Office at (619) 545-8123 to reach the Duty Yeoman after hours.

Cities Near NAS North Island

While there’s plenty of housing available on-base, some service members choose to live in several of the cities near NAS North Island. Nearby cities include San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, La Mesa, Imperial Beach, and Bonita. Be warned, however, that the cost of living in San Diego is much higher than the national average.

San Diego, CA

The second-largest city in California behind Los Angeles, San Diego is a city with a population of around 1,359,000 people. Located 8 miles from NAS North Island, San Diego offers the fastest commute to the base. Homes in the area are expensive, starting at $398,000 for a two-bedroom, one-bath residence. NAS North Island enjoys San Diego Bay weather, which means it sees some of the warmest temperatures on the west coast. Like most of California, it is considered a semi-arid climate. On average, NAS North Island sees highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s. The average daily temperature is about 65 degrees. The area sees about 9 inches of rain annually.
