Welcome to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy! Connecticut’s U.S. Coast Guard Academy serves as an academic and military community for cadets earning a Bachelor of Science degree in one of nine engineering or professional majors. Graduates of the academy also earn a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard.

The academy is considered one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning. As the smallest of all the service academies, it affords cadets a close-knit community during a demanding four years of education that aims to transform cadets physically, intellectually, and ethically.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy Directions

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy location is New London, Connecticut. The waterfront campus is found on the banks of the Thames River.

Amtrak provides train service to New London. The Cross Sound Ferry provides service between Orient Point, New York, and New London, Connecticut.

The nearest major airports to the academy are T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island, and Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut. Each airport is approximately an hour away from the academy.

Incoming Cadet Procedures

Prospective cadets will attend an orientation program before they report in. The overnight orientation program helps prospective cadets finalize their college decision and prepare to swear into the Coast Guard.

Prospective cadets should stay physically fit and medically ready to ensure their success in the program. They should also read the cadet handbook so they know what to expect, how to best prepare for their first day, and how to stay on track at the academy. Prospective cadets also must complete all enrollment forms by the stated deadline.

Guests should arrive via the main gate for the academy, which is found on Mohegan Avenue. A REAL ID act photo ID is needed for entry.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy Finance Office

The academy does not charge for tuition, room, or board. In fact, cadets are paid a salary while they attend the academy. When cadets graduate, they commit to five years of service as a Coast Guard officer, though many choose to serve longer. As such, cadets are set up for financial success!

Weather for New London, Connecticut

New London has hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city gets approximately 49 inches of rain and 24 inches of snow each year.

In the summer, temps can soar to the 80s, but nighttime offers cooler temperatures in the 50s and 60s. During the winter, you’ll see average highs in the 30s and 40s, with average lows in the 20s.

The academy helps develop cadets’ character with a number of academic organizations, competitive and club sports, recreational clubs, and honor societies.

Organizations include groups for archery, ballroom dance, cycling, fencing, golf, music, skiing, surfing, theater, yoga, and much more. And just about every sport you can think of is available, including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, hockey, lacrosse, rowing, rugby, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.
