Introduction

Welcome to Fort Hamilton, located in Brooklyn, New York. Over 3,000 personnel and their families are active on the base that covers about 120 acres. Fort Hamilton is a historic post, and many of its buildings are included on the National Register of Historic Places. Entering Fort Hamilton and Post Amenities

All drivers on post must have a valid military ID, veterans or retiree ID, a valid driver’s license, and a valid driver’s insurance card. All visitors must stop by the Visitor Control Center on 101st Street.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

For all military personnel arriving during duty hours, you must report to the Visitor’s Center next to the Main Gate. You must have a visitor’s pass while on the installation, and you must in-process through your assigned unit on post. You will need these items for your processing appointment: orders, and mandates, envelope from your losing post, any graduation certificates that apply, and all travel receipts. And remember, if you are bringing any dependents with you, bring all legal documentation that applies.

Fort Hamilton is located in Brooklyn, which puts it smack dab in the middle of a sprawling metropolis. With the city of New York all around you, there’s no shortage of options for housing and entertainment.

New York, New York, the Big Apple, has over 8 million people living in it and sits on the largest natural harbor on the Atlantic Coast in the United States. Immediately surrounding the base in Brooklyn and some of the other outlying areas, like Queens, will be the most cost-effective options in terms of housing. High costs of living will be the main challenge you will face in New York. But, rentals and apartments are readily available.

Mount Vernon

About 30 miles from Fort Hamilton is Mount Vernon, New York. Located in the Bronx area, Mount Vernon is a rapidly growing community. It centers around the manufacturing and technology industries. It offers a little quieter option than some of the more metropolitan centers around the post. The cost of living is more reasonable here as well. Fort Hamilton has no public schools on post. Fort Hamilton is located, however, within the New York City Department of Education, the country’s largest public school system. Depending on where you live will determine the school district your student will attend. You will have a wide range of schools to choose from, so be sure to know what’s near you based on location. At Fort Hamilton, you can expect a wide range of weather throughout the year. Summers usually don’t get blisteringly hot, staying in the mid-’80s on average. July will be your hottest month. The summer is typically when you can expect the most rainfall as well. The winters will get cold, with average temperatures falling into the ‘20s. Prepare for the snow every year as well, with February being the snowiest month of the year.
