Introduction 

Welcome to the home of the Air Commandos since 1961! Hurlburt Field supports the 1st Special Operations Wing, Headquarters Air Force Special Operations Command, an Air Force major command, and a number of associate units. It’s a great place to live and work. The 1st SOW boasts a 29-squadron wing, capable of deploying and sustaining a fight anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice. The AFSOC is America’s specialized air power. It provides Air Force Special Operations Forces for worldwide deployment and assignment to regional unified commands throughout the spectrum of conflict. The base employs more than 8,500 active duty personnel, 32,000 retirees, 1,200 civilian personnel and about 10,000 family members. Public Transportation

There are no Amtrak stops in the Florida Panhandle or near Hurlburt Field. Alternatively, you could take a Greyhound bus from Fort Walton Beach and connect to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Pensacola and most other major cities on the East Coast and in the South.

Flights to Hurlburt Field, FL

The closest airport to Hurlburt Field is Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. It’s about 15 miles from the front gates of Hurlburt Field. The airport is served by five major airlines (Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, Southwest and United Airlines) via daily direct or connecting flights.

Driving Directions to Hurlburt Field, Florida

  1. If you drive from the airport, you will get on Eglin Parkway/Florida Route 85.
  2. Take a slight right onto Lewis Turner Boulevard/Florida Route 189.
  3. Turn onto Green Acres Road, it will become Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
  4. Continue on Freedom Way.
  5. Go straight onto Independence Road.
  6. Take a right onto Tully Street.
  7. Turn right on Cody Avenue to enter Hurlburt Field.

If you don’t yet have a DOD-issued identification, you will be subject to a background check at the Visitor Control Center before you’re allowed to enter Hurlburt Field. Click here to learn more about where to go.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Upon arrival, all permanently assigned personnel report to the Commando Welcome Center with copies of orders and receipts for travel vouchers. The Commando Welcome Center is the one-stop shop to welcome new commandos to Hurlburt Field. Upon arrival, inbound members will be escorted to the Hurlburt Welcome Center by their sponsor during their appointment time. New arrivals are briefed by several agencies on programs, assistance and services available on base.

The Hurlburt Field Legal Assistance Office provides legal advice and assistance to eligible clients, including active duty, retired, and dependents with a military ID card. The office is where you want to go to get a will prepared or have other legal documents reviewed, including powers of attorney, living wills, bills of sale, simple affidavits, leases, name changes, uncontested divorces, etc. Call for hours or to make an appointment. Power of attorney and notary services available on a walk-in basis.

Cities Near Hurlburt Field

There are several cities near Hurlburt Field, including Fort Walton Beach, Ocean City and Wright. Most people stationed at Hurlburt Field choose to live in Fort Walton as it offers plenty of housing options, family-friendly attractions and a short commute to work.

Best Places to Live Near Hurlburt Field

Fort Walton Beach, FL

Fort Walton Beach is a small city with a population over 20,000 in the Florida Panhandle near Hurlburt Field. It’s known for its white sand beaches, emerald waters and beautiful golf courses on adjacent Okaloosa Island. The city is home to family-friendly resorts and things to do like parks, museums and aquariums. The island’s Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park is home to dolphins, penguins and alligators.

Ocean City, FL

The suburb of Fort Walton Beach, Ocean City, is home to approximately 6,300 people. It is part of the Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area and has grown over the past decade. The census designated place has been named one of the best places to live in Okaloosa County because of its quality schools, affordable housing and diversity.

Wright, FL

While Wright is deemed a census designated place, it’s nearly as populated as nearby Fort Walton Beach. The area is ideal for those connected to Hurlburt Field because of its affordable housing, great public schools, numerous parks and lots of restaurants. There are many options for your child's education near Hurlburt Field. The state offers traditional public schools, as well as public charter schools and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of local daycares and child care programs on and off base. Children who live on base attend schools in the Okaloosa or Santa Rosa school district. Hurlburt Field Weather

Florida is known for its mild winters and hot, humid summers. In the winter, the average highs are in the 60s and average lows are in the 40s. Outside the gates, with beautiful beaches and other Gulf Coast hot spots, there's no shortage of things to do. Conclusion

Hurlburt Field has more to offer than meets the eye. The area is bustling with things to do and there are white sandy beaches just a short drive away. While stationed at Hurlburt Field you’ll have the opportunity to train with the Air Commandos while the location provides the chance to experience everything the Florida Panhandle and the Gulf of Mexico have to offer.
