Introduction

Welcome to Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, located in Montgomery, Alabama. Maxwell AFB is home to more than 12,500 active duty, reserve, civilian and contractor personnel. Maxwell and the Gunter annex is home to Air University, a key component of the Air Education and Training Command, and is the headquarters for the Air Force’s professional military education. Montgomery is an appropriate place to see an Air Force Base with a concentration in education as the city is the site of the first U.S. civilian flying school established by the Wright Brothers.

More than likely, you will be flying through the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, which serves as the central gateway to Alabama. Otherwise, you will fly into the Montgomery Airport, a smaller regional airport conveniently located near base.

Entering Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base and Amenities

All drivers on base must have a valid military ID, veterans or retiree ID, a valid driver’s license, and a valid driver’s insurance card. All visitors must stop by the Visitors Center located by the main gate on Maxwell Blvd E.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

All personnel reporting to Maxwell-Gunter AFB must check-in with their respective units. The unit commander’s support staff will conduct the in-processing procedure for permanent party personnel. You will need to bring all hand-carried documents given to you during the out-processing briefing from your losing base, including medical records, personnel records, finance records.

Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base has 5 gates, although one is closed indefinitely. There are three points of access to the Maxwell base and one to the Gutner annex. The main gate is located through Maxwell Blvd.

On base, you will have access to one DDESS Elementary School for children in preschool to 8th grade. Within a 25 mile radius of Montgomery, Alabama, there are 84 public schools in four county public school systems: Montgomery County School System, Autauga County School System, Pike Road School System, and Elmore County Schools. Transportation is provided for students enrolled in public schools.

You can expect the climate in Alabama to be warm and humid. You should also be aware that Alabama has both fall and spring tornado seasons, so be sure that you keep a weather radio handy even though it’s more north near Birmingham that sees higher frequencies of Tornado watches. Winters in Montgomery are brief and mild, with the year seeing longer summers that bring with it that infamous humidity. Even the coldest season on average, January, rarely sees freezing temperatures or snow.
