Introduction

Welcome to Mountain Home Air Force Base, proud home of the 366th Fighter Wing, which reports to Air Combat Command, ​​nicknamed the “Gunfighters.” The mission of the 366th Fighter Wing is to enhance readiness, take care of airmen and their families, build trust, and develop leaders. Today, the 366th Fighter Wing includes the firepower of F-15E Strike Eagles and the Republic of Singapore Air Force F-15SSG.

The population boasts 3,173 active duty, 3,900 dependents (children and spouses), 10,000+ retirees, 406 GS civilians, and 176 NAF civilians. The Mountain Home AFB sits on 7,500 sq miles of the high desert landscape.

Where Is Mountain Home AFB?

Where Is Mountain Home AFB?

Located in southwestern Idaho in Elmore County on a high desert plateau between two large mountain ranges at an elevation of 2,996 ft above sea level. Mountain Home AFB is situated about 50 miles southeast of Boise and 95 miles northwest of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Boise Airport Transportation

There is only one airport within 60 miles of the base and that is the Boise Airport. Arrange for your sponsor to pick you up as there is no means of public transportation from the airport to the base other than limited taxi service which is very expensive. If you find yourself without transportation, call the Command Post at 208-828-5800 for assistance.

Driving Directions To Mountain Home AFB

No matter which direction you come from, take Idaho Interstate 84.

From Boise International Airport (BOI)

The closest airport to Mountain Home Air Force Base is Boise International Airport which is located approximately 50 miles from the base. There are limited shuttle services from the airport to MHAFB. Contact the Mountain Home Shuttle Service at 1 (208) 580-1887 for transportation.

By Vehicle

1. I-84 West From Twin Falls – Take Exit 95 toward Mountain Home/Fairfield onto American Legion. Continue down American Legion (about 2 miles) to a one-way left turn onto Main Street. Continue on Main Street, which turns into ID-67 for approximately 10 miles to the front gate of MHAFB.

2. I-84 East From Boise – Take Exit 90 toward Mountain Home/Bruneau onto ID-51. Continue on ID-51 for about 7 miles through the town of Mountain Home. ID-51 will turn into ID-67; continue for approximately 10 miles to the front gate of MHAFB.

If you are traveling with non-id-card holders in a separate vehicle, they must have a federally accepted STAR license, insurance, and registration and check-in at the front gate Visitor Center on the right-hand side of the gate.

Guards will conduct a 100% ID check at all gates. All visitors must have a valid military ID or proceed to the visitor control center for a pass.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

If you arrive at Mountain Home AFB by commercial means, you should call your sponsor from the Visitor Center, at the main gate. Your sponsor or unit representative will arrange transportation onto the base or the base taxi can be reached at 1 (208) 828-2215. If you arrive by taxi, the taxi driver must be sponsored onto the installation by the military member through the Visitor Center, Monday through Friday 0730 to 1630 excluding holidays and family days. Outside of the hours listed above, visitor passes may be obtained at the main gate or call 1 (208) 828-2256 for assistance.

Your sponsor can be a valuable help to you during your in-processing and should be the first person you contact when you arrive here. Your sponsor will be able to answer many of your questions about the base and the local community, as well as in-processing. In-processing sign-in takes place with your unit Command Support Staff during normal duty hours. All of your processing and mandatory appointments will be scheduled for you through your CSS. In most cases, your base orientation and training program will be completed within 15 workdays after your arrival.

Military Personnel Section customer service section Building 512 suite 137 is the focal point for personnel information and serves as an initial point of contact between you and other MPS offices. The customer service staff can also provide information and/or assistance with applications for humanitarian reassignment/deferment, permissive reassignment, application for separation, assignment preferences as well as ID card applications, and other personnel-related services.

Most students will attend school in the Mountain Home School District near base. Although these are all public schools, Mountain Home AFB Primary School is located on base. All others are off base in the greater Mountain Home and Pine, Idaho, area; children will be provided with bus service if living over 1.5 miles from school.

Mountain Home Air Force Base is approximately 3,000 feet above sea level, the climate has its ups and downs with summer high temperatures ranging from 85-100 degrees and lows hovering between 45-60 degrees. Winter high temperatures average 45 degrees, with lows averaging about 24 degrees. The summers are short, hot, arid, and mostly clear and the winters are very cold, dry, and partly cloudy.
