Introduction 

Welcome to Cannon Air Force Base! Located about 7 miles southwest of Clovis, New Mexico, Cannon is the home of the 27th Special Operations Wing. In addition to the 27th Special Operations Wing’s duty as the host wing, the unit uses advanced aircraft to infiltrate, exfiltrate and resupply special operations forces. The 27th Special Operations Wing also provides special operations forces with intelligence, reconnaissance and close air support. Cannon AFB is also home to the 27th Special Operations Maintenance Group and 27th Special Operations Medical Group. About 2,500 people live on-base. The closest airport is the Clovis Municipal Airport, which is about 13 miles from Cannon Air Force Base. Taxi or greyhound bus services are available from the airport.

Driving Directions

From Clovis Municipal Airport If arriving by car, Cannon Air Force Base is just off Highway 60/84. If you are arriving from the south on US Highway 70, take State Highway 467 to the Portales gate. The gate at Cannon Air Force Base is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Entering Cannon Air Force Base and Amenities

Persons are required to have a DOD or federally issued identification card or a Cannon AFB issued pass. Call the Cannon AFB ID Card Office at 1 (575) 784-4933 for more information on ID card requirements at Cannon Air Force Base.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Airmen arriving for in-processing must check in at the unit administrative section during normal duty hours from 0730-1630. After duty hours, check in at the Caprock Inn lodging office at 401 S. Olympic Blvd., Bldg. 1801. Federal service employees should report to the Civilian Personnel at the Base Support Center in Bldg. 600, Room 20388, 110 E. Sextant Ave. during normal duty hours of 0700-1700. Bring copies of your orders as well as any medical and dental records to in-processing. The process may take several days, so be sure and bring enough uniforms to get through the entire in-processing procedure. Cities Near Cannon AFB 

While many military family members call base housing their home, others choose to live in nearby communities. The neighboring communities Clovis, Texico, Portales and Melrose are the closest. The cost of living near Cannon Air Force Base is lower than the national average, so area rental housing and real estate prices are reasonable.

Best Places to Live Near Cannon AFB

Clovis, NM

Clovis is a town of 32,000 people and is the county seat of Curry County, New Mexico. The town is mainly known for its agricultural interests, but the nearby military base is also very influential economically. Located just 8 miles from the Cannon Air Force Base, the town has always been a main location on the railway line. The area is also known for its cheese production and cattle ranching. Local attractions include the Old Homestead Museum and Pappy Thornton Farm Museum, which offers exhibits including antique farm equipment and other related antiques. Also nearby is the Clovis Depot Model Train Museum which provides insight into the development of the railroad and allows close up viewing of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train cars.

Texico, NM

Texico's name is a combination of "Texas" and "New Mexico" and has a current population of 1,065 people. The town offers a quiet community for those looking to live close to Cannon Air Force Base but still has a small-town atmosphere. The town is only 17 miles from Cannon Air Force Base. Local attractions include the Hillcrest Park Zoo, which offers over 500 animals on display in their natural habitats for visitors to enjoy. The 22.5 acre zoo area includes playgrounds, basketball courts and picnic areas. The Norman and Vi Petty Rock and Roll Museum is also nearby and features original equipment used by artists like Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings. Rock 'n' roll memorabilia is plentiful, as are antique radios and numerous photographs.

Portales, NM

Portales is a huge producer of peanuts and is also the nation's top producer of organic peanut butter. There are over 40 dairies in the vicinity, and the town boasts a population of 11,000 people. Cannon Air Force Base is just 17 miles away and is one of the major economic influences on the town. Portales is also home to the Eastern New Mexico University, which is the third-largest university in the state. Local attractions include the Blackwater Draw Museum and Archeological Site, which offers prehistoric exhibits dating back 11,000 years. Mammoth and mastodon bones are on display and caveman stone weapons. The site is an active archaeological dig that has unearthed fossilized creatures such as bison, wolf and horses. The museum and site are part of the Eastern New Mexico University which has done extensive research into prehistoric findings and preserving the site for future excavations.

Melrose, NM

Melrose is a small community in Curry County, New Mexico. Its population is 736 people. The town offers a serene environment for those military personnel looking to relocate closer to where they work. Cannon Air Force Base is located 19 miles from the town. Local attractions include the Oasis State Park which offers hiking, biking, camping and picnic facilities. There are also nature walks as well as fishing and boating opportunities in the large park area. There are no schools on Cannon Air Force Base. Students who live on base will either attend the Clovis Municipal School District or the Portales School District. The Clovis Municipal school district serves grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Clovis provides bus service to anyone living more than a mile from one of their schools. The Portales School District consists of four elementary schools, one middle school, one junior high and one high school.
