So, you’ve got orders to Fort Liberty, NC? Congratulations! You’ll be joining the nearly 54,000 troops and 14,000 civilians working on the post that is the storied home to the U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Forces.

Fort Liberty covers approximately 500 square miles with 146,000 acres dedicated to training, more than 1,400 miles of paved road and 21 miles of railroad. The post supports a population of about 260,000 including military families, retirees, contractors and others.

In addition to a slew of local amenities in close proximity to the post and the nearby city of Fayetteville, Fort Liberty families enjoy broad recreational opportunities within driving distance – from mountain getaways to the west and the beaches to the east.

Amtrak’s downtown station in Fayetteville is located at 472 Hay St. You can find fare and schedule information on their website here.

Fayetteville Airport Transportation

Soldiers can hail a taxi or use the complimentary Airport Liaison shuttle to HHC, Fort Liberty Reception. There is a courtesy phone at the Fayetteville Regional Airport,which allows you to call the reception desk at 1 (910) 396-4244 for transportation. Many airport taxis require cash, which is about $30 for a one-way trip.

The Army Community Service Outreach Coordinator’s assistance is available at the airport from 1000 to 1900 Monday through Friday. For more information, call 1 (910) 764-0123.

Raleigh Airport Transportation

The “Airporter” is recommended for this 90-minute trip. You can call 1 (866) 618-8680 for more information.

If Driving I-95 South

  1. Take exit 56 toward Fayetteville, Fort Liberty, Pope AFB, US 301 South.
  2. Turn right at the first light onto Grove Street/ NC-24/NC-210 then turn right onto Liberty Blvd/NC-24/NC-210.
  3. Follow Liberty Boulevard to Santa Fe Drive. Turn left at Santa Fe Drive then merge onto the All American Freeway.

If Driving I-95 North

  1. Merge onto I-95 Business Route N/US-301 N toward Fayetteville/Fort Liberty/Pope AAF.
  2. Stay on US-301 for about 7.3 miles then turn left onto Owen Drive. It will turn into the All American Freeway taking you to Fort Liberty.

Entering Fort Liberty and Post Amenities

To enter the post, you will need to show your military ID. If you don’t have your military ID, you will need your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Your vehicle will likely be searched if entering the post for the first time or without a military ID. So you may want to include some extra time in your travel plans to allow for such a delay.

Once you pass through the Access Control Point, take the second exit onto Reilly Street. Get in the far-left lane and turn left onto Normandy Drive. The Soldier Support Center is on your left.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

The Fort Liberty Reception Company is a 24-hour operation servicing all permanent party soldiers including XVIII Airborne Corps, 82nd Airborne Division, USASOC, tenant units and Active Guard Reserve as well as all students attending the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

If you have questions concerning in-processing or leave extensions should be directed to the HHC, Fort Liberty Reception.

The Soldier Support Center’s in-processing stations include verification of assignment and pinpoint orders, personnel, finance, medical records screening, issuing, and updated ID Cards, post vehicle registration, dental screening, ACS, Youth Services, CIF and transportation. They are open from 0800 to 1700 daily.

Where Should I Live Near Fort Liberty?

Proximity to work is a factor to consider when choosing the best places to live near Fort Liberty, NC. But with 18 gates and many residential neighborhoods in the area, you should have no problem finding a convenient spot to call home while stationed here.

Cities Near Fort Liberty, N.C.

Fort Liberty is most closely associated with the city of Fayetteville, the sixth largest in North Carolina. The suburban metro area around Liberty also includes a number of delightful smaller cities, towns, and regions that are all well worth seeing and all fine places to live while stationed here.

Best Places to Live Near Fort Liberty, NC

Fayetteville

Named for the revered general of the American Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette, Fayetteville’s patriotic name reflects the community’s culture. Fayetteville is home to about 350,000 proudly patriotic citizens, and the seat of Cumberland County. Surrounded by North Carolina’s Sand Hills between coastal plains and piedmont, Fayetteville is on the Cape Fear River. Downtown Fayetteville offers unique, local shopping and dining.

The area is also home to golf courses, museums, botanical gardens, live music, performing arts and minor league sport teams. The city hosts a social media webpage to help residents easily engage with the community. It is a 12.5-mile drive from Fort Liberty’s All American Visitor Control Center to Fayetteville. Driving time is about 20-minutes but can vary due to traffic conditions.

Hope Mills

Hope Mills is about 15-miles or a 30-minute drive south of Fort Liberty via the All-American Freeway. A historical mill village with a community of 15,000+, Hope Mills ... puts ‘Hope’ as a high priority for our citizens, whom we still identify as neighbors.

Sanford

Sanford, population 29,311, is 41-miles or a 50-minute commute from Fort Liberty via N.C. 87 South. It began as a railroad town in 1874 and today modern life flourishes through warm hospitality and arts, music, shopping, dining, history and family fun.

Pinehurst & Southern Pines

Known as “The Home of American Golf,” Southern Pines and Pinehurst are home to Fort Liberty, North Carolina’s best golf courses, top-notch local dining and boutique shopping, historical sites and equine sports.

Southern Pines’ population is over 12,000. Fort Liberty is a 27-miles or a 35-minute drive via Manchester and Raeford Vass Roads; Pinehurst is another 6 miles down the road which adds an average of 15 extra minutes to your commute. Pinehurst’s population is nearly 16,000.

Spring Lake

About 6 miles or 15-minute drive from Fort Liberty, Spring Lake easily connects via Butner Road, and is home to a population of about 12,000. With a nickname like “Nearly Fort Liberty” it is no surprise thousands of Fort Liberty Soldiers and families, as well as, military retirees and veterans call Spring Lake home.

Though Spring Lake has plenty of outdoor recreation options, it is its location that draws soldiers to it — sometimes for a quick and convenient lunch, sometimes for the ability to avoid traffic when commuting.

 

Best Schools Near Fort Liberty NC

The Fort Liberty School District is governed by DODEA. There is one primary school that serves pre-k and first grade, five elementary schools available for grades pre-k through fifth, and one intermediate school for grades second through fifth. High schools are operated by localities depending on where you reside.

Some of the best schools near Fort Liberty, NC include Fayetteville State University, Methodist University and Fayetteville Technical College — all contribute to a young workforce skilled in STEM fields like biological and biomedical studies, computer and information sciences as well as mathematics and statistics that are needed to provide critical defense contract support according to the Fayetteville Economic Development Corporation.

Fort Liberty NC Weather

In Fayetteville and Fort Liberty, summers are hot and muggy. Winters are short and cold, and it is wet and partly cloudy year-round. Throughout spring, summer, fall and winter, the temperature ranges from 35°F to 91°F, according to Weatherspark.com.

Spring Lake is host to many outdoor activities, including fishing at Carvers Creek State Park, home of Long Valley Farm, once a Rockefeller retreat; shooting at the Fort Liberty Clay Target Center; and kayaking or canoeing at Spring Lake Outpost.
