Introduction

Welcome to your new home at Seymour Johnson AFB, home of the 4th Fighter Wing and 916th Air Refueling Wing! Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself in the southeast section of Goldsboro, North Carolina, a medium-sized quintessential Southern town with a moderate cost of living.

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base currently has over 530 active duty officers and 3,800 enlisted personnel and their families stationed here.

The 4th Fighter Wing is the host unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and accomplishes its training and operational missions with F-15E Strike Eagles. Two of the wings’ fighter squadrons are operational units, capable of deploying worldwide on short notice and immediately generating combat power. The other squadrons are responsible for training all F-15E aircrews for the Air Force. The 916th ARW, a tenant unit at Seymour, is an Air Force Reserve Command Wing under Air Mobility Command. It is assigned 10 KC-135R Stratotankers. The 4th Fighter Wing, “Fourth But First,” has always led the way in the defense of our great nation.

Given its location near numerous rivers and waterways in the southern United States, you can expect the climate at Seymour Johnson to be humid, muggy and pretty warm year-round. But the region does get its fair share of wet and cold weather.

Spring

Summer

By the end of spring, the daily temperature is typically in the high 70s to mid 80s and it continues to get hotter as summer goes on, usually peaking in July. The chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms also goes way up as the weather gets hotter so you’ll want to prepare for humidity as well as the heat.

Fall

The temperature will start to cool down once fall rolls around but this season is as mild as the springs are. The average high doesn’t even start to dip below 50 until the middle of November. And the chance of rain drops off dramatically after summer turns to fall.

Winter

One of the best things about living in the South are the mild winters. Sure, temperatures can hit the high 20s and low 30s at night but daytime temps are quite a bit warmer, with some days averaging in the 70s. Just make sure you grab a jacket or wear layers to be prepared when the sun goes down.
