IntroductionWelcome to your new home at Seymour Johnson AFB, home of the 4th Fighter Wing and 916th Air Refueling Wing! Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself in the southeast section of Goldsboro, North Carolina, a medium-sized quintessential Southern town with a moderate cost of living. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base currently has over 530 active duty officers and 3,800 enlisted personnel and their families stationed here. The 4th Fighter Wing is the host unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and accomplishes its training and operational missions with F-15E Strike Eagles. Two of the wings’ fighter squadrons are operational units, capable of deploying worldwide on short notice and immediately generating combat power. The other squadrons are responsible for training all F-15E aircrews for the Air Force. The 916th ARW, a tenant unit at Seymour, is an Air Force Reserve Command Wing under Air Mobility Command. It is assigned 10 KC-135R Stratotankers. The 4th Fighter Wing, “Fourth But First,” has always led the way in the defense of our great nation. Directions to Seymour Johnson AFBWith major highways running along the base in every direction (waterfront portions aside), getting to and from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is no sweat.
Driving Directions to Seymour Johnson Air Force BaseWhether you’re coming from the north or south, the easiest way to reach Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is via I-795. Your GPS navigation may lead you to Slocumb gate, which is open weekdays from 0600 to 1800. If you arrive during off hours, enter “Seymour Johnson Berkeley Gate” as a search term when looking up directions.
- From the highway, take the West Elm Street exit.
- Continue east for a little over 3 miles.
- West Elm Street turns left and becomes South Berkeley Boulevard.
- This brings you to the Main Gate and Visitor’s Center.
Greyhound StationThe Goldsboro Greyhound station sits right in the middle of town and not far from the base itself. Tickets are not sold at the location so they must be purchased online or elsewhere.
Amtrak StationThe nearest Amtrak connecting station is the GWTA Transfer Center in Goldsboro. The closest rail station is the Selma-Smithfield station in Selma, North Carolina, approximately 40 miles away.
Flights to Seymour Johnson Air Force BaseThere are a number of small and regional airports near Seymour Johnson, but the closest major is the Raleigh-Durham International Airport in nearby Raleigh. It’s a little over an hour by car to the base and there’s also a Greyhound station in Raleigh that can bring you to Goldsboro in about the same amount of time.

Entering Seymour Johnson AFB and Base AmenitiesIn order to gain access to the installation, you must have valid identification. To register your vehicle, a current driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration is required. If you are driving a rental car, proceed directly to the gate and be prepared to show valid identification credentials and rental car documents. Call the Visitors Center at 1 (919) 722-1343 for assistance.
Check-in Procedures for Incoming PersonnelNewly assigned service members arriving at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base during normal duty hours are required to report to their unit admin section first to receive their unit's in-processing checklist and Duty Information Worksheet. Newcomers must also attend the Military Personnel in-processing on the first available day after they arrive. The in-processing is held at 1330 every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in Bldg. 3010. You must bring your sealed packet from your last base, BAS Form (AF Form 220), and Duty Information Worksheet to this appointment. Your unit admin section should be able to assist you with obtaining these forms.
