Where Is Fort Gregg-Adams?

With Richmond nearby and the twin highways of I-95 and I-295 bracketing the post, Fort Gregg-Adams is extremely easy to get to and from. So getting on post is a breeze and taking a trip elsewhere is just as easy.

Richmond International Airport

Located southeast of the business center of Richmond, Richmond International Airport (RIC) is 40 minutes from Fort Gregg-Adams. You can use the United Service Organizations (USO) Center which is available in the terminal for active duty and retired personnel and their dependents. It’s open daily from 0900 to 2100.

United Service Organizations (USO) Center

If you are arriving via Richmond Airport, you can go to the USO for free no-cost transportation to Fort Gregg-Adams! You’ll need two copies of your orders and should call ahead to ensure you have everything to qualify for this free ride from the USO at 1 (804) 236-7234.

Taxi Service

The airport taxi company that can be reached at 1 (804) 222-6666 or 1 (804) 233-4444 is allowed to drive on Fort Gregg-Adams and its surrounding areas.

AMTRAK

You can easily take advantage of AMTRAK’s widespread regional and national rail services. The nearest station is located at 3516 South Street, Petersburg, VA 23803, and is open for ticketing from 1100 to 1830 daily.

Richmond International Airport Shuttle

Buses are provided by Greyhound and the terminal can be found at 108 East Washington Street, Petersburg.

I-95 Southbound from Arlington VA

1. Proceed south on I-95 merging onto I-295 S via exit number 84A (left exit) toward Rocky Mount, N.C.
2. Continue on I-295 S onto VA-36 W/Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Colonial Heights.
3. When you're coming off I-295 via exit 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Petersburg, proceed to the fourth traffic light and turn left at the Sisisky Boulevard Gate.

I-95 Northbound from Rocky Mount, N.C.

1. Proceed north on I-95, merging onto I-295 N via exit number 46 toward Washington.
2. Continue on I-295 N and merge onto VA-36 W/Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Colonial Heights.
3. When you're coming off I-295 via exit 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Petersburg, proceed to the fourth traffic light and turn left at the Sisisky Boulevard Gate.

I-64 Eastbound from Charlottesville

1. Proceed east on I-64, merging onto 1-295 S via exit number 177 toward Washington/Norfolk.
2. Proceed on I-295 south and merge onto VA-36 W/Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Colonial Heights.
3. When you're coming off I-295 via exit 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Petersburg, proceed to the fourth traffic light and turn left at the Sisisky Boulevard Gate.

I-64 Westbound from Virginia Beach

1. Proceed west on I-64 merging onto I-295 S via exit number 200 toward Rocky Mount, N.C. Merge onto I-295 S using the left side exit toward Bottoms Bridge.
2. Proceed on I-295 south exiting onto VA-36 W/Oaklawn Boulevard via exit number 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Colonial Heights.
3. When you're coming off I-295 via exit 9B toward Fort Gregg-Adams/Petersburg, proceed to the fourth traffic light and turn left at the Sisisky Boulevard Gate.

Entering Fort Gregg Adams and Post Amenities

If you have never been on post, or don’t have a valid ID, you may need to stop at the Welcome & Visitors Center to check in. They can get you set up with the necessary passes and/or info about post access and, if need be, getting you the proper ID or a new CAC card.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Because Fort Gregg-Adams is host to many units, procedures for incoming personnel vary depending on which unit you are reporting to. If you are in the Army. For Navy, Air Force, and Marine personnel, you will also have different locations to report to. For details, visit the Fort Gregg-Adams check-in procedures website.

Though each unit has its own requirements for check-in paperwork, it is a good bet that you will need at least a combination of the following. Be sure to call ahead to ensure that your check-in goes smoothly, and remember to wear the proper uniform of the day.

Fort Gregg-Adams Visitor Center

The Visitor Control Center is adjacent to the Gregg-Adams gate, just off Route 36. The staff can help visitors find a destination on the post and answer general questions about installation services and events.

All adults (18+ years) will be checked for identification at Fort Gregg-Adams, and service members and their families will be expected to present their CAC ID cards or military dependent cards.

First-time visitors who do not have federal identification cards or have expired identification must go to the Visitors Control Center, VCC. You’ll have to present a valid government issued photo ID such as a passport or driver’s license in order to undergo a background check.

The VCC located on Gregg-Adams Ave is open on weekdays (Monday - Friday), from 0800 - 1600. If this is your first time, you can submit a pre-approval request utilizing either DES Form 190-3 (individual request) or DES Form 190-2 (group request).

The VCC will contact the sponsor to validate the visitor's request and the sponsor's responsibility for their guests prior to the guest being authorized access to the installation.
