MCAS Yuma: In-Depth Welcome Center (2021 Edition)

Introduction

Welcome to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona. MCAS Yuma is an aviation training base that provides access to more than 1 million acres of bombing and aviation-training ranges.

MCAS Yuma supports 80 percent of the Marine Corps’ air-to-ground aviation training. Twice a year, the air station hosts the Weapons and Tactics Instructor course. This seven-week course provides advanced tactical aviation training.

MCAS Yuma’s population includes approximately 4,000 active-duty Marines and sailors. And each year, the station hosts approximately 70 aviation units that bring an average of 600 aircraft and 14,000 personnel to the air station for ongoing training.

The station is home to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1, Marine Aircraft Group 13, Marine Air Control Squadron 1, Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 and Combat Logistics Company 16. MCAS Yuma is found in the southwest corner of Arizona that borders California and Mexico. To the north of the station is the Colorado River, to the northeast is Phoenix, to the east is Tucson, to the south is Mexico and to the west is San Diego, California.

  1. From East 32nd Street, turn right onto Avenue 3E.
  2. The main gate entrance for MCAS Yuma is on Avenue 3E, after the north gate used for commercial vehicles.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Personnel who arrive at MCAS Yuma during work hours will check in at the station headquarters in Building 980. Call 1 (928) 269-2864 for more information.

Cities Near MCAS Yuma

While many military family members call base housing their home, others choose to live in nearby communities. San Luis, Somerton, Yuma, the Yuma Foothills, Winterhaven (in nearby California) and other neighboring communities provide housing, employment and other services for MCAS Yuma military families.

Housing rentals in the community become limited from October through April, when the area gets an influx of snow birds. Housing and utility costs for the area may exceed BAH. Yuma

The city of Yuma just outside MCAS Yuma offers residents a short commute to the air station. The city has a population of approximately 98,000 people.

Yuma embraces a host of outdoor activities. Go tubing down the Colorado River, go off-roading on the Imperial Sand Dunes or check out the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area. More outdoor adventures can be had in the city’s parks. The city maintains more than 600 acres of parks and facilities, including nine athletic complexes, two golf courses, outdoor sports courts, walking paths, a dog park and more.

Yuma is also home to great historical spots, like the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, the Colorado River State Historic Park, Historic Yuma Theatre and the Castle Dome mining museum.

There are many options for your child’s education near MCAS Yuma. Arizona offers traditional public schools, as well as public charter schools and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of local daycares and child care programs on and off station.

Children who live at MCAS Yuma may attend schools in Yuma Elementary School District One and Yuma Union High School District. Children who live in 16th Street housing are within the boundaries of the Crane School District and Yuma Union High School District. There are no DoDEA schools on the air station.

MCAS Yuma has a dry, desert climate with sunny days year-round. The area only gets about 3 inches of rain each year.

In winter, the average highs at MCAS Yuma are in the 60s and 70s. Average lows dip to the high 40s and low 50s.

In the summer, the average high soars to more than 100 degrees. Summer nights cool down a bit, with average lows in the 70s and 80s. Low humidity helps keep things more tolerable in the hot summer months.
