Introduction

Welcome to your new home at Naval Base Point Loma! Consolidated under Commander Navy Region Southwest, the six installations that make up Naval Base Point Loma are the Naval Submarine Base; Naval Mine and Anti-submarine Warfare Command; Commander Third Fleet Headquarters complex; Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Headquarters; SPAWAR Systems Center and Fleet Intelligence Training Command Pacific, forming a highly technical hub of naval activity.

Naval Base Point Loma provides support to 70 U.S. Pacific Fleet afloat and shore-based tenant commands headquartered on the base with 22,000 military and civilian personnel and more than 450 unique facilities.

Naval Base Point Loma is in beautiful San Diego, and is one of the most diverse and challenging naval bases in the Navy. It is situated in one of the oldest communities in San Diego, surrounded by the ocean on one side and the San Diego Bay on the other.

Driving Directions to Naval Base Point Loma

Naval Base Point Loma is approximately 4 miles southwest of San Diego International Airport, 10 miles west of downtown San Diego and 122 miles from Los Angeles.

From Los Angeles:

1. If you are driving, you’ll take Interstate 5 south.
2. Take the Rosecrans exit and head west.
3. Continue west on Rosecrans street to Naval Base Point Loma’s main gate, which is open 24 hours a day.

Amtrak Station Near Naval Base Point Loma

If you arrive by train, the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego is the stop nearest to base, roughly 20 minutes away. Coincidentally, the closest Greyhound is also found in downtown San Diego, about 21 minutes away.

San Diego International Airport

If you are traveling by air, you will land at San Diego International Airport. Shuttle service is not available from the airport directly to Naval Base Point Loma, but check with your command to see if a duty driver or your command sponsor can provide transportation. More than a dozen rental car agencies are available at the airport with shuttles to the consolidated rental car center.

Driving Directions from San Diego International Airport
  1. If you are driving from the airport, follow the signs for North Harbor Drive.
  2. Head east on North Harbor Drive toward Winship Lane.
  3. Turn left onto Rosecrans Street.
  4. Continue on Rosecrans Street until you reach the Main Gate.
  5. If you are driving a rental car, you will need to stop at the Visitor’s Center on the left as you enter Naval Base Point
  6. Loma to obtain a temporary/visitor’s pass for the vehicle.

In order to gain access to the installation, you must have valid identification. To register your vehicle, a current driver’s license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration is required. If you are driving a rental car, proceed directly to the main gate and be prepared to show valid identification credentials and rental car documents. Click here to find out where to go.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Incoming personnel assigned to Naval Base Point Loma are required to show up on their assigned day with all required paperwork (copy of orders, DA 31, medical and dental records, and military personnel file). When you arrive at Naval Base Point Loma, report to the Main Gate (Post 6). This is the best place to get current information on ships in port and directions to your command. The duty office personnel will assist you in getting in touch with your command. If you need to call the duty office, the number is 1 (858) 431-6482.

The Naval Base Point Loma Personnel Support Detachment Office is open from 0730 to 1630 Monday through Friday. Cities Near Naval Base Point Loma

Naval Base San Diego is located just west of downtown San Diego, so the city is within easy commuting distance for both driving and public transit. The Point Loma area is beautiful and right outside the base’s gates, but housing comes at a premium. To the north of the bay are multiple great communities like Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, and Mission Valley.

Best Places to Live Near Naval Base Point Loma

Naval Base Point Loma is located within a short drive of downtown San Diego so getting an apartment in the city is certainly an option if you prefer the busy city lifestyle and don’t mind city prices. If you’re looking for a house off base, the top-recommended communities are in Mission Hills, Del Cerro, City Heights and, of course, Point Loma.

City Heights

A highly diverse and densely populated area, City Heights offers residents more affordable housing options as well as cultural influences. It is close to lots of social amenities, has good public transportation, and is the ideal place to grab food that you can’t find elsewhere in the city.

Del Cerro

A bit further east sits Del Cerro. It’s slightly more affordable than Mission Hills or Point Loma (the further east you go, the better home prices get) and is family friendly. Del Cerro is safe, has some of the best schools in the state and is still close to base. The hilly neighborhood is also perfect for those who enjoy a challenging walk in the morning.

Mission Hills

Mission HIlls is an upscale, affluent neighborhood. It’s just north of downtown San Diego, overlooking Old Town, making it a prime spot to put down roots. Commutes to Point Loma, downtown or elsewhere in the city are a breeze from this central location. The area is safe and clean, and close to shopping and restaurants.

Point Loma

Point Loma is one of the oldest, established neighborhoods in San Diego. The area is known for Cabrillo National Monument, the naval base and Point Loma Nazarene University. Most people joke that San Diego only has one season: summer. While this is mostly true, you will experience some rainy and overcast days through fall, winter and spring, but the summers are almost always extremely warm and dry.

Spring

Rain is pretty common at this time of year. When it’s not raining, the temperatures are pleasant, trending on the warm side. The season is ideal for outdoor concerts or hiking.

Summer

Things begin to really heat up in June. The higher temps stick around until Halloween, and the warmest days are usually in August and September. Take advantage of the sunny days and all of the outdoor activities.

Fall

Temperatures are still on the warmer side in October but there’s always the chance of rain. The chance of rain increases in November. The temps are still above 60. This is the perfect time to go camping at the beach.

Winter

As expected, the lowest temperatures of the year are during winter months. It rarely snows in California; you’re more likely to get rain around Naval Base Point Loma. Skiing can be enjoyed a short drive away.
