Welcome to Naval Base Point Loma! The peninsula that is home to Naval Base Point Loma has been inhabited for thousands of years, first by Native Americans, then by Spanish explorers and soldiers, and finally by members of the U.S. military after the Army acquired the land in 1852. It remained an active Army coast artillery installation called Fort Rosecrans until 1945. In 1959, Fort Rosecrans was turned over to the Navy, and by 1981 it was officially designated a Naval Submarine Base, supporting several assigned submarines.

In 1998, the six separate installations that operated on Point Loma (the Naval Submarine Base, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, Commander Third Fleet Headquarters complex, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Headquarters, SPAWAR Systems Center, and Fleet Intelligence Training Command Pacific) were consolidated into Naval Base Point Loma.

Today, the six installations that make up Naval Base Point Loma form a highly technical hub of naval activity that supports over 22,000 Active Duty, reservists, contractors, and DoD-Civilian employees. Those stationed at this storied base get to enjoy year-round sun, beautiful beaches, and all that San Diego has to offer.

Naval Base Point Loma is one of multiple Navy and Marine Corps installations in the San Diego Metro area. Getting to Naval Base Point Loma

Naval Base San Diego is located in western San Diego on a peninsula in San Diego Bay. It takes about 25 minutes to get to the Naval Base from Downtown San Diego, but only about 15 minutes to get to the base from San Diego International Airport.

Other nearby cities with airports include Santa Ana (home of the John Wayne Airport), which is about 90 minutes away from Naval Base San Diego, and Los Angeles (home of the Los Angeles International Airport), which is about 2 to 2.5 hours away.

Guide to Major Areas of Naval Base Point Loma

The base is divided into two sections: the Main Base, which takes up most of the southern part of the Point Loma Peninsula, including the location of the Submarine Base, and the Harbor Drive Annex, located on the northern coast of San Diego Bay closer to Downtown San Diego. In addresses and facility names, the Main Base is often referred to as the SUBASE.

Main Gate (Post 6)

The Main Gate is located on Rosecrans St. The Pass and ID office is located near this gate. It’s open 24/7. However, it is limited to inbound traffic from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. daily.

Harbor Dr. Annex (Post 3)

The Harbor Dr. Annex Gate is located at Harbor Dr. and Lanning Rd. It’s open 24/7.

SUBASE Topside Back Gate (Post 4)

SUBASE Topside Back Gate is located at McClelland Rd. and Cabrillo Memorial Dr. It’s open on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for outbound traffic only and from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for all traffic.

Ocean View (Post 1)

The Ocean View Gate is located at Electron Dr. and Catalina Blvd. It’s open every day from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Peninsula Access Rd. (Post 2)

The Peninsula Access Rd. Gate is located at Catalina Blvd. and Cabrillo Memorial Dr. It’s open every day from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Seaside (Post 12)

The Seaside Gate is located at Woodward Rd. and Cabrillo Memorial Dr. It’s manned on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Automated access is available at all other times.

Topside (Post 9)

The Topside Gate is located at Electron Dr. and Catalina Blvd. It’s manned on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Automated access is available at all other times.

Bayside (Post 7)

The Bayside Gate is located at Rosecrans St. and Strothe Rd. It’s manned on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Automated access is available at all other times.

Lindberg Field (Post 10)

The Lindberg Field Gate is located at Harbor Dr. and Airport Terminal Rd. It’s manned on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Automated access is available at all other times.

Old Town (Post 16)

The Old Town Gate is located at Pacific Hwy. and Enterprise St. It’s manned on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Automated access is available at all other times.

NTC Medical Clinic (Post 19)

The NTC Medical Clinic Gate is located at Lanning Rd. and Liberty Station. It’s open weekdays from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What ID Do You Need For Base Access?

A REAL ID-compliant ID is generally necessary for base access for any visitor over the age of 18. IDs that grant unescorted access to Naval Base Point Loma include: a Veteran’s Health ID Card (VHIC) or a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) card.

As you get settled at Naval Base Port Loma, there are a number of key base facilities you should become familiar with.

ID Card Center (DEERS/RAPIDS)

The ID Card Center provides enrollment in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (for benefits access), issues Common Access Cards (CAC) and ID cards for active, reserve and retired service members, service member families, and civilian and contractor employees.

Naval Base Point Loma does not have its own independent housing services office. Instead, the San Diego Housing Services Center (HSC), located at Naval Station San Diego, provides support for service members aboard NAVBASE Point Loma, whether they are seeking housing on or off base.

The primary medical facility on Naval Base Point Loma is the Naval Base Health Clinic, Naval Training Center, San Diego. Available services at this clinic include primary care, labs, OB/GYN, radiology, and pharmacy.

Legal Services

Legal assistance services are not available on Naval Base Port Loma, but can be accessed nearby at the Regional Law Office Southwest location on Naval Base San Diego. Assistance is available for many common legal issues, including but not limited to: notary, power of attorney services, divorce, foreclosure advice and counseling, immigration, consumer and financial affairs, and more.

Walk-in hours are limited to Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It is highly recommended to make an appointment through the Region Legal Service Office Southwest (RLSO SW) website.

Morale, Recreation, and Welfare on Naval Base Point Loma

Navy Life Southwest provides a wide range of services and facilities to support military personnel and their families aboard Naval Base Point Loma. You may notice that some of the facilities typically available at military installations are not available at Naval Base Point Loma (i.e., a movie theater, bowling alley, golf course, and recreational pool).

Library

Naval Base Point Loma does not have a physical, brick-and-mortar library. However, service members and dependents can access digital resources through the Navy General Library Program, such as ebooks, audiobooks, research databases, and more with a DOD-MWR library card.

The nearest DOD-MWR library is at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in North San Diego County.

Community Recreation Center

The Community Recreation Center is home to MWR Community Recreation at NAVBASE Point Loma. Community Recreation offers classes and activities, organizes trips and travel, puts on special events, and more for Active Duty, DoD employees, dependents, and retirees. One of the two Information, Tickets, and Travel offices is located within the Community Recreation Center.

Additionally, outdoor gear rentals including party games, camping and picnic equipment, and more are available year-round at the Community Recreation Center. From Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available for rent and can be launched at Smuggler’s Cove.

Naval Base Point Loma has two Liberty Centers designed to offer junior Sailors a place to relax and have fun outside the barracks. These centers are open only to E6 and below. They offer computers, wi-fi, game rooms, movies, and even trips and community activities.

Information, Tickets and Travel Office (IT&T)

Thinking about spending a day at Legoland, or driving up to LA for a day at Disneyland? Make sure you stop by the Information, Tickets and Travel Office to buy your tickets. At the IT&T Office, military personnel and dependents can get exclusive discounted tickets for a variety of local events and attractions.

Family Support Services

Naval Base Point Loma has one Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) which offers a wide range of support services for military personnel and their families. This includes parenting and life skills programs, financial programs, deployment support, transition and employment assistance, relocation assistance, counseling and victim assistance, exceptional family member support, information and referral, and more.

Unaccompanied Housing

As space allows, personnel ranked E3 and below are required to live in provided barracks if unaccompanied. E4s may also be required to live in Unaccompanied Housing depending on availability. In some circumstances, more senior personnel may also be allowed to live in UH, typically if they are Geographic Bachelors or have agreed to act as Resident Advisors.

Off-Base Housing

Housing referral services are available through the Military Housing Office. Housing referral services include providing a list of approved and non-approved apartment complexes and mobile home parks or a list of currently available properties in the local area.

Military Preferred Living Areas

San Diego is a fantastic city with many great neighborhoods to choose from. The biggest factors in your search will likely be cost, commute time, and overall vibe. One of the closest but most expensive options is Point Loma, one of the oldest established neighborhoods in San Diego, and beloved for its beautiful bay views.

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a bit more of an urban feel (think supremely walkable, great restaurants, shopping, and more), you’ll want to consider Little Italy or City Heights. Both of these are very affordable neighborhoods in comparison to the standard housing costs in San Diego. Last, but not least, we want to spotlight Del Cerro, another more affordable housing option with a more suburban feel.

Schools and Child Care

There are no DoD schools aboard Naval Base Point Loma. Most, if not all, families stationed at Naval Base Point Loma will send their children to schools in the San Diego Unified School District. This is great news, since the San Diego Unified School District is a fantastic and highly ranked district. Additional options include public charter schools and private schools.

San Diego Unified School District

The San Diego Unified School District is a massive district covering the San Diego Metro Area. Over 95,000 students are enrolled across 198 schools in the district. It is in the top 25% of school districts in the state of California according to Niche, and receives an A grade.

While there is some variation in school quality, the schools clustered around Point Loma are all very highly rated. Notably, the San Diego Unified School District offers school choice, so students are not limited to the school they are zoned for based on housing location.

Additionally, San Diego Unified School District offers many specialty schools, including but not limited to: East Village, an early college high school that offers dual enrollment with San Diego City College; San Diego Metropolitan Regional & Technical (MET) high school; and the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) for grades 6-12.

Public Charter Schools

There are more than 100 public charter schools operating in San Diego County that families may want to consider for their children.

Yes, any military personnel with dependents (including a spouse) are permitted to live in base housing.

Can I live on base if I'm not married?

Yes, single service members of rank E3 and below are required to live in Unaccompanied Housing on base. Depending on availability, E4s may also be able to live in provided barracks. Special exceptions may be made for higher-ranked service members if they are Geographic Bachelors or agree to be Resident Advisors.

Is there a veterinary clinic on base?

No, there is not a veterinary clinic on base. The nearest military-run veterinary facility where service members can take their pets for routine care is the MCAS Miramar Veterinary Treatment Facility.

Are ride shares allowed on base?
