Consolidated under Commander Navy Region Southwest, the six installations that make up Naval Base Point Loma are the Naval Submarine Base; Naval Mine and Anti-submarine Warfare Command; Commander Third Fleet Headquarters complex; Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Headquarters; SPAWAR Systems Center and Fleet Intelligence Training Command Pacific, forming a highly technical hub of naval activity. Driving Directions to Naval Base Point Loma
Naval Base Point Loma is approximately 4 miles southwest of San Diego International Airport, 10 miles west of downtown San Diego and 122 miles from Los Angeles. From Los Angeles: 1. If you are driving, you’ll take Interstate 5 south. 2. Take the Rosecrans exit and head west. 3. If you arrive by train, the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego is the stop nearest to base, roughly 20 minutes away. Coincidentally, the closest Greyhound is also found in downtown San Diego, about 21 minutes away.San Diego International Airport
If you are traveling by air, you will land at San Diego International Airport. Shuttle service is not available from the airport directly to Naval Base Point Loma, but check with your command to see if a duty driver or your command sponsor can provide transportation. - If you are driving from the airport, follow the signs for North Harbor Drive.
- Head east on North Harbor Drive toward Winship Lane.
- Turn left onto Rosecrans Street.

Entering Naval Base Point Loma and Base Amenities
In order to gain access to the installation, you must have valid identification. To register your vehicle, a current driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration is required. If you are driving a rental car, proceed directly to the main gate and be prepared to show valid identification credentials and rental car documents. Incoming personnel assigned to Naval Base Point Loma are required to show up on their assigned day with all required paperwork (copy of orders, DA 31, medical and dental records, and military personnel file). When you arrive at Naval Base Point Loma, report to the Main Gate (Post 6). This is the best place to get current information on ships in port and directions to your command.
