Driving Directions to Naval Base Point LomaNaval Base Point Loma is approximately 4 miles southwest of San Diego International Airport, 10 miles west of downtown San Diego and 122 miles from Los Angeles. From Los Angeles: 1. If you are driving, you’ll take Interstate 5 south. 2. Take the Rosecrans exit and head west. 3. Continue west on Rosecrans street to Naval Base Point Loma’s main gate, which is open 24 hours a day.
Amtrak Station Near Naval Base Point LomaIf you arrive by train, the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego is the stop nearest to base, roughly 20 minutes away. Coincidentally, the closest Greyhound is also found in downtown San Diego, about 21 minutes away.
San Diego International AirportIf you are traveling by air, you will land at San Diego International Airport. Shuttle service is not available from the airport directly to Naval Base Point Loma, but check with your command to see if a duty driver or your command sponsor can provide transportation. More than a dozen rental car agencies are available at the airport with shuttles to the consolidated rental car center.

- If you are driving from the airport, follow the signs for North Harbor Drive.
- Head east on North Harbor Drive toward Winship Lane.
- Turn left onto Rosecrans Street.
- Continue on Rosecrans Street until you reach the Main Gate.
- If you are driving a rental car, you will need to stop at the Visitor's Center on the left as you enter Naval Base Point
- Loma to obtain a temporary/visitor's pass for the vehicle.

To register your vehicle, a current driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration is required. Check-in Procedures for Incoming PersonnelIncoming personnel assigned to Naval Base Point Loma are required to show up on their assigned day with all required paperwork (copy of orders, DA 31, medical and dental records, and military personnel file). When you arrive at Naval Base Point Loma, report to the Main Gate (Post 6). This is the best place to get current information on ships in port and directions to your command. Cities Near Naval Base Point LomaNaval Base San Diego is located just west of downtown San Diego, so the city is within easy commuting distance for both driving and public transit. The Point Loma area is beautiful and right outside the base’s gates, but housing comes at a premium. To the north of the bay are multiple great communities like Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, and Mission Valley.

Naval Base Point Loma WeatherMost people joke that San Diego only has one season: summer. While this is mostly true, you will experience some rainy and overcast days through fall, winter and spring, but the summers are almost always extremely warm and dry.
SpringRain is pretty common at this time of year. When it’s not raining, the temperatures are pleasant, trending on the warm side. The season is ideal for outdoor concerts or hiking.
SummerThings begin to really heat up in June. The higher temps stick around until Halloween, and the warmest days are usually in August and September. Take advantage of the sunny days and all of the outdoor activities.
FallTemperatures are still on the warmer side in October but there’s always the chance of rain. The chance of rain increases in November. The temps are still above 60. This is the perfect time to go camping at the beach.
