Schofield Barracks/Wheeler Army Airfield History
Named AfterLt. Gen. John M. Schofield, who in 1872 recognized the strategic importance of Oahu to the defense of the United States
The site which became Schofield Barracks was ceded to the U.S. government July 26, 1899, less than a year after Hawaii was annexed. On Dec. 4, 1908, Capt. Joseph C. Castner arrived to begin construction of a temporary cantonment on the Waianae Uka military reservation. In April 1909, the War Department named the post after the late Gen. John M. Schofield, former commanding general of the U.S. Army.
In 1921, Schofield became home to the Hawaiian Division—the only complete division in the U.S. Army and the Army's largest single garrison, with a population of 14,000 by 1938, making it the second-largest city in Hawaii. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese flew over Schofield and bombed nearby Wheeler Army Airfield. Almost 1 million men went through the Jungle Training Center at Schofield before being sent overseas during World War II.
When the 25th Infantry Division returned in September 1954, it increased Hawaii's overall population by 5 percent. The Capehart Housing Act allowed for the construction of 1,600 housing units from 1955 to 1962. Today, the Schofield Barracks area includes Wheeler Army Airfield and Helemano Military Reservation and consists of more than 16,000 acres.
Wheeler Army Airfield was established Feb. 6, 1922, named Wheeler Field on Nov. 11, 1922, in honor of Maj. Sheldon H. Wheeler, former commander of Luke Field who died in a plane crash July 13, 1921. Wheeler was designated a National Historic Landmark in August 1987 and was returned to the Army on Nov. 1, 1991.
