NSA Naples traces its origins to 3 October 1951, when it was established as Headquarters, Support Activities, with a mission to support NATO's Allied Forces Southern Europe and, later, U.S. Sixth Fleet.

In-Processing
Newcomers must complete the mandatory Area Orientation (AO) within 30 days of arriving to NSA Naples; completion is a prerequisite for receipt of driving privileges. Eligible attendees are active-duty military, civilians, contractors, and command-sponsored dependents over 18 years old. Sponsors register newcomers for Area Orientation before arrival, provide transportation, and keep the newcomer advised of the arrival date. To sign up, register using the online form (https://forms.osi.apps.mil/r/A2gkHxvEVC) or email NSANaplesAO@us.navy.mil with newcomer name, rank/GS level, personal email, command, arrival date, and sponsor contact information; both sponsor and newcomer then receive links to the Area Orientation packet, which includes forms needed during and after AO (such as Sojourners paperwork and the driver's license application) plus a base map and local area maps. During the AO session, newcomers complete the driver's test, submit medical paperwork, enroll in TRICARE, and receive department briefings. The last part of Area Orientation is the ICR (Intercultural Relations) trip, generally held on Friday during AO week. Where To Live
NSA Naples is a split installation: the operational base sits at Capodichino in Naples, next to Naples International Airport, while the family housing hub is the Navy Support Site in the town of Gricignano di Aversa, north of Naples. The Housing Service Center (Support Site Building 2072, next to the Village Forum) assists personnel with assignment into a Military Family Housing unit and with locating housing in the Naples area; per the MilitaryINSTALLATIONS government housing page, newly arriving families are directly assigned to government quarters under NSA Instruction 11103.5D. Families who live off base rent on the local economy, where housing consists of a wide variety of apartments and villas (single-family dwellings), duplexes, and a growing number of 'villettas' or townhouse-type units in the Naples area.
NSA Naples Support Site (Gricignano di Aversa)
Small Town
The Navy Support Site is located in Gricignano di Aversa, 15 miles north of Naples per DoDEA, and is the installation's government family housing area. The Housing Service Center is in Building 2072 next to the Village Forum, the Community Housing Office (off-base rentals) is in Building 2073 just outside the back gate, the Navy Lodge is on site (Building 2033), and the Unaccompanied Housing office is on the Support Site (Building 2074). Government apartments are configured as two-, three-, and four-bedroom units with two bathrooms (per MilitaryINSTALLATIONS).
Commute: Approximately 14 miles between the Support Site and the Capodichino base with no toll, per official Navy Gateway Inns and Suites driving directions: Autostrada A1 toward Rome, the Pomigliano/Villa Literno split onto the SS7 Bis Variante, then the Gricignano/Support Site exit.
Housing Service Center, Village Forum and Navy Lodge on site; DoDEA Naples Elementary School resides on the Support Site, which DoDEA describes as offering 'a complete complement of educational, social, commercial, and recreational venues' (napleses.dodea.edu/school-about-us).
Naples area economy housing
Off-base rentals throughout the Naples area consist of a wide variety of apartments and villas (single-family dwellings), duplexes, and a growing number of 'villettas' or townhouse-type units (per the MilitaryINSTALLATIONS housing page). The Community Housing Office in Building 2073 outside the Support Site back gate handles off-base housing, and the Navy's Naples Community Housing Resource Guide covers economy-lease requirements such as landlord-provided bottled water from a Navy-approved vendor and Advanced OHA to help pay the security deposit at lease signing.
