Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) occupies a 579-acre peninsula in Tokyo Bay about 30 miles southwest of Tokyo, with a stated mission of service to the U.S. Seventh Fleet and support of the U.S.-Japan Alliance, and the Defense Department describes it as America's most important naval facility in the Western Pacific, serving approximately 24,000 military and civilian personnel. CFAY provides critical support to U.S. 7th Fleet, the largest of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed fleets, and its strategic location and extensive facilities are vital for maintaining readiness and supporting maritime operations throughout the Western Pacific. It is also the base of the forward-deployed naval forces-Japan aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), the United States' only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.
