Named AfterSaint Bonaventure
Naval Base Ventura County encompasses facilities at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme on the southern California coast. Established during World War II, it is home to the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (Point Mugu) and the Naval Construction Battalion Center (Port Hueneme). The base supports missile testing over the Pacific, Seabee training and operations, and various research programs. Its sea test range is vital for testing ship-defense and air-launched weapons systems.

Advance Base Depot begins operations at Port Hueneme
On May 18, 1942, Port Hueneme began operations as Advance Base Depot, a training and supply staging area for the newest naval unit — the Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). In 1945, the depot was renamed Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme.

Seabees get their name
On March 5, 1942, the Naval Construction Battalions adopted the name "Seabees" from the first letters of "construction battalion," along with the motto "construmus batumius" ("we build, we fight") and a logo of a worker bee wielding tools and a Thompson submachine gun.
1962
Navy Marine Mammal Program begins at Point Mugu
In 1962, on the sand spit between Mugu Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean, the Navy Marine Mammal Program began researching how animals such as dolphins and sea lions could contribute to national security.
2000
NAS Point Mugu and NCBC Port Hueneme consolidate
On Oct. 11, 2000, NAS Point Mugu and NCBC Port Hueneme consolidated into a joint operation called Naval Base Ventura County. San Nicolas Island was transferred to NBVC on Oct. 1, 2004.

President Ronald Reagan’s body flown from Point Mugu
At President Reagan’s death in 2004, his body was flown from Point Mugu to Washington, D.C., to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, then returned to Point Mugu for interment at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

Naval Base Ventura County is actually two separate installations about 15 miles apart: Naval Air Station Point Mugu and Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme. Before you do anything else, confirm with your gaining command which site you’re assigned to. They share a base name and phone system but function as distinct locations with different daily realities — getting this wrong on arrival creates real headaches.
When you arrive, report to the Quarterdeck at Building 1, staffed 24 hours. The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) at (805) 989-8146 handles relocation, housing referrals, and settling-in support for you and your family. Both sites have on-base housing, but availability varies — get your application in early.
Ventura County sits about 50 miles north of Los Angeles along the Pacific Coast — close enough to the city to enjoy it, far enough that prices are comparatively saner. Good weather year-round, easy beach access, and more breathing room than San Diego or LA proper. It’s a popular duty station for a reason, and people tend to want to come back.

Ventura County offers military families a range of housing communities within a short commute of Naval Base Ventura County. The closest communities are Port Hueneme and Oxnard, which border the base and offer a mix of beachfront condominiums, single-family homes, and apartments at relatively moderate prices for Southern California. Camarillo, about 10 miles east, is popular for its small-town suburban feel, strong schools, and high-tech employment base. Ventura, a few miles north, offers historic charm, excellent beaches, and a lively downtown. There is no public transportation between Port Hueneme and Point Mugu, so private vehicles are essential. Ventura County is generally an expensive area; median home values and rents are among the higher in California.
