Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 61
Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 61 (VR-61) was established on Oct. 1, 1982. The squadron’s mission is to provide worldwide around-the-clock transport of passengers and cargo in support of all U.S. armed forces.
Currently, the Islanders are finishing the process of transitioning from the C-9B Skytrain to the C-40A Clipper. The new airframe is more efficient and has an increased payload that will allow VR-61 to better serve the fleet.
VR-61 has two C-40A Clippers in their inventory with a third scheduled to arrive in the fall of 2016. The “Islander” team is composed of 250 full-time support and local selected Reserve personnel deeply rooted in Whidbey Island and the greater Northwest.
VR-61 compiled more than 126,000 mishap-free flight hours while flying its previously assigned four C-9B aircraft. The squadron has received the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, two Congressman Bill Chappell awards, eight Safety “S” awards, four Battle “E” awards, four retention awards and the James M. Holcombe Maintenance Award.
The Islanders are mission-oriented with a rich heritage of operational excellence and unswerving commitment; they enjoy the status of being the premier logistics squadron in the Northwest.
