When the duty day is done and it’s time to relax, you can stop by the Sheppard Club, bowl, play golf, swim laps or maybe see a movie. These and more are available on base. There are dozens of other opportunities to relax and have fun in the local area as well.


Sheppard has three lighted softball fields, three lighted football/soccer fields and a lighted running track. The fields are used for intramural and varsity outdoor sporting events. All fields can be reserved for squadron activities. For more information, call 940-676-2972.


The base has two bowling centers for league and individual play, with 16 lanes each. Both centers have computerized automatic scoring, bumper bowling for children and amusement machines. Each facility has a snack bar. The South Lanes offers pro shop convenience items. The North Lanes offers Extreme Bowling with black lights Friday and Saturday evenings. Keeping “Fit to Fight” is easy at Sheppard. Two fitness centers make exercising and having fun a snap. Basketball, volleyball and racquetball are available at both centers, with intramural programs as well.

Fitness advisors and Cooper-certified trainers are available at both centers.

Cardio room with personal viewing systems, weight room, intramural/varsity sports programs, spinning classes (an exercise program conducted on specially designed stationary bikes). The children’s room is a child-safe, well-equipped exercise room for parents. Only children 12 months and walking up to 6 years of age are permitted in the area. Food and drinks are not allowed in the room (except for water), and parents must wipe down exercise equipment after their workout.

Texas wildlife is abundant and mostly on private land. Permission to hunt must be obtained from the landowners. Texas hunting and fishing licenses are required for both residents and nonresidents between 17 and 65. Located on the old Wind Creek Golf Course, this course has two alternating pin placements per hole with a creek winding through several of the holes. Pin placements are rotated the first week of every month. While relatively open, there are enough trees, rough, water, mandos, OBs and elevation changes to make this a fun and challenging course. Outdoor Recreation has all your equipment needs. Rent gear for your party, picnic, lawn and garden, home improvement, camping or fishing. Adventure programs available through the Outdoor Recreation include whitewater rafting, canoeing, indoor rock climbing, horseback riding, sky diving and kayaking. It also offers private bus rentals on a 25 passenger bus. Rental items available include canoes, kayaks, camping gear, fishing equipment, coolers, recreational and sports equipment, barbecue/propane grills, chairs/tables, travel trailers and more. Outdoor recreation also provides RV storage. Fees range from $12 to $15 per month or $120 to $150 per year depending on lot size. The Shootin’ Shack offers two skeet fields, two trap fields and a five stand year-round. All Airmen, active-duty, retired military and civilian employees are eligible to shoot. Don’t have access to the base? You can download a civilian skeet pass at Ammo and guns are available at the range. The range is on the north end of the base in Building 2382. The south picnic area is in front of Outdoor Recreation by the south softball complex. This area includes two covered pavilions, each with barbecue pits, picnic tables and playgrounds. The hospital picnic area provides picnic tables, pavilions, children’s playground and a parking area. The Sheppard Annex at Lake Texoma is open year-round. It is about 120 miles east of Sheppard and 15 miles north of Whitesboro, Texas, making it ideal for the “get back to nature” getaway. The annex provides 40 single-room cabins, three two-bedroom trailers, two newer cabins with a loft and a single-bedroom house that has an enclosed patio and fenced yard. It has 16 water and electric-only hook-up spaces and 25 full-hookup services. There are more than 30 campsites equipped with a covered pavilion, picnic table and fire ring/barbecue pit. The RV site and campgrounds have a shower, restroom and laundry facility. There is a wide choice of activities to add to your leisure experience while at Texoma. These include camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, walking/hiking trails, tennis, softball and a driving range. The lodge, being the hub of Texoma Annex, offers an area of comfort and relaxation. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The boat dock is open 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily. There is a well-supplied convenience store, large-screen television, video games, pool table, fitness center, coin-operated laundry, rental movies and games. This renovated, multimillion-dollar facility houses numerous books, DVDs, books on CD, Playaways and research materials and includes an adjacent coffee shop, Brew U, which serves Starbucks beverages and delicious snacks. There are 18 databases that you can access through the Sheppard library to include: ENSCOHost, Encyclopedia Britannica, Country Watch, CultureGrams, Faulkner’s, FEND, Gale, Heritage Quest, Morningstar, MyiLibrary, One Click Digital, Overdrive, Petersons, Safari Books, Stratfor, Transparent Language, Tumblebooks and Universal Class. Kindle Fires and Nooks are available to check out at the library. If we don’t have the book you are looking for, we’ll request it from another library through interlibrary loan. Call the library to ask about the home-school co-op classes. Looking for an educational activity for the children? Story time and summer reading programs and special seasonal programs offer a wide variety of continuing adventures. Whether you seek group study (rooms available) for that tough exam or just a cappuccino while surfing the Internet, the cheerful base library staff invites you to drop by. The goal of recreational services is to develop esprit de corps, promote family well-being and enhance mental and physical fitness. It provides a variety of core activities and services such as holiday celebrations, seasonal and thematic basewide special events, performing arts, entertainment and other cultural programs. It offers a variety of arts and crafts classes, including basket-weaving, glass-fusing and ceramic fusion. Meeting areas are also available to support commander’s calls, squadron functions and instructional and self-improvement classes. The Airman’s Club houses a ballroom with pool tables, air hockey, football challenge and a jukebox. It features Friday and Saturday night Airman’s Club dances with state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The poolroom has five pool tables and a jukebox. The ballroom has tables and chairs for studying or watching the big-screen television, a large dance floor, DJs on selected nights, game machines, a stage for live bands and pool tables. The Sports Pub has 12 televisions, three pool tables and DJs on select nights for the greatest in hit music entertainment. For convenience, there are ATM machines in the Airman’s Club. The Airman’s Club also offers karaoke, video nights, pool tournaments and other monthly programs. For more information, call 940-676-2710.


The Sheppard Club is an “all ranks” club that welcomes all of the base community. We have two lounges; The Back Shop (enlisted lounge), which has 10 televisions, pool tables and darts for entertainment, and Duffy’s (officer’s lounge) which has five televisions, pool table, crud table, shuffleboard and darts. The club also has the new family friendly Hangar 1. In Hangar 1, people can relax in a recliner and watch their favorite game on any of nine televisions or the big screen. There is also a huge fresh air patio with plenty of tables and heaters or fans (whatever the weather deems necessary). During the warmer weather the DJs perform on the patio. There are several venues for catered events. The lounge hours are 4 to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 4 p.m. to midnight Friday. The kitchen hours are 2 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 4 to 11 p.m. Friday. Wing Wednesdays features specials on chicken wings and there are chef’s specials throughout the week. The First Friday Social is the first Friday of every month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (will post notice of change if major event interferes). Air Force Services Club Card drawings and giveaways for club members are also on First Friday. Sheppard’s athletic program offers a variety of sports. The intramural sports program provides competition in golf, bowling, basketball, volleyball, softball and flag football. The sports program also includes varsity-level sports in soccer, men’s and women’s basketball and softball. Sheppard has a professional rubber-surface running track that is lighted at night.


Sheppard has two outdoor seasonal pools. The Bunkerhill water park has two slides; it is behind the main gate shoppette. The main pool is next to the Solid Rock Cafe and offers lap swim, water aerobics and open swim. Both pools are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. For more information, call 940-676-4141.
