Introduction

Welcome to Holloman Air Force Base, the home of the 49th Wing! Holloman AFB supports national security objectives by deploying worldwide to support peacetime and wartime contingencies. The wing provides combat-ready Airmen and trains F-16 Viper pilots and MQ-9 Reaper pilots and sensor operators. It’s a great place to live and work, with a long history of providing service in World War II, Korea, Southeast Asia and NATO-led Operation Allied Force. The base employs more than 21,000 active duty and civilian personnel, and covers nearly 60,000 acres in New Mexico’s Tularosa Basin, between the Sacramento and San Andreas mountain ranges. The base is about 10 miles west of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and has been a part of the local community since 1942. Public Transportation

The nearest Amtrak stop to Holloman AFB is in El Paso, Texas, roughly 90 miles away. This stop will connect you to major routes that lead across the country. Alternatively, you could take a Greyhound bus from Alamogordo and connect to Albuquerque and even major cities like Chicago.

Flights to Holloman Air Force Base, NM

The closest airport to Holloman AFB is El Paso International Airport. It’s about 90 miles from the front gates of Holloman AFB. The airport is served by seven major airlines, with 14 nonstop destinations.

Driving Directions to Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico

  1. If you drive from the airport, you will follow the signs for TX-601 Spur.
  2. Take the 20A exit to merge onto US-54 East toward Alamogordo.
  3. Continue onto Exit 32 (signs for Sean Haggerty Drive/Alamogordo/US-54 East)
  4. Take US-54 East for 60 miles.
  5. Use the two left lanes to turn onto US-70 West.
  6. Use the right lane to turn right and Holloman Air Force Base will be on the right.

Entering Holloman Air Force Base and Amenities

If you don’t yet have a DOD-issued identification, you will be subject to a background check at the Visitor Control Center before you’re allowed to enter Holloman AFB. Click here to learn more about where to go.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Upon arrival, notify your sponsor immediately and/or report to Military Personnel Flight at Customer Support with your PCS orders. The MPF reception desk is manned during duty hours only. Important documents to hand carry include your orders, lodging confirmation number, sponsor's phone number, commander's phone number, birth certificates, marriage license, Social Security cards, car registration, pet health certificates and vaccination records, school records and immunizations records. There are three gates that provide access to Holloman AFB.
  • Main Gate

    - Open 24/7.
  • West Gate

    - Open 0600 to 0800 (inbound traffic) and 0600 to 1800 (outbound traffic) Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays and wing down days.
  • La Luz Gate

    - Open 0600 to 0830 (inbound and outbound traffic) and 1530 to 1730 (outbound traffic) Monday through Friday.

The Holloman Air Force Base Legal Assistance Office provides legal advice and assistance to eligible clients, including active duty, retired, and dependents with a military ID card. The office is where you want to go to get a will prepared or have other legal documents reviewed, including powers of attorney, living wills, bills of sale, simple affidavits, leases, name changes, uncontested divorces, etc. Call for hours or to make an appointment. Power of attorney and notary services available on a walk-in basis.

Holloman AFB Library

The Ahrens Memorial Library at Holloman AFB is stocked with books, DVDs, newspapers, magazines and audiobooks. The library also offers a variety of programs to help you learn a new language, study for college exams, discover your genealogy and more. There is one main city near Holloman Air Force Base: Alamogordo. Most people stationed at Holloman AFB choose to live in Alamogordo as it offers a short commute to work.

Alamogordo, NM

The seat of Otero County, Alamogordo boasts a population of nearly 32,000 people. Its economy is largely supported by its close proximity to Holloman Air Force Base, just a few miles away. It is the birthplace of space exploration and boasts a variety of outdoor spots that draw in visitors every year. Family-friendly activities like paying a visit to the world’s largest pistachio, the Toy Train Depot, the Alameda Park Zoo and ski resorts are popular among those who live here. If you’re living on base, your children will attend Alamogordo Public Schools. Elementary school kids will go to Holloman Elementary, middle school students attend Holloman Middle and high school kids go off base to Alamogordo High School. Wherever they attend, rest assured that they’ll have access to the finest education possible. And if your child requires extra help, there are a number of programs available through the district. Holloman AFB’s School Liaison provides school-aged children resources and information to help achieve academic success. Hot, dry summers and short, cool winters await when you live and work in Holloman Air Force Base. Summer temperatures can be brutal but temperatures rarely go below freezing.

Spring

Spring temperatures are quite pleasant with highs around the 70s during the day and very little cloud cover. The season is ideal to take advantage of the many outdoor activities available in the area. March and April are the perfect months to start planting your garden.

Summer

It’s hot and sometimes wet in New Mexico throughout the summer months. The warmest months are June and July, with temperatures starting to fall in September. The average highs hover around the mid 90s and nighttime temps are in the high 60s. Indoor activities or water sports are best enjoyed in the summer.

Fall

Fall months are still sunny and warm, with rainy days becoming a rare occurrence again. September and October are the ideal months to take advantage of the outdoor activities in the area. Enjoy a hike in the nearby mountains or go fishing.

Winter

As you would expect, the coldest time of the year is during winter. Lows hover around the freezing mark, especially in January. The area around Holloman Air Force Base rarely gets snow but the nearby mountains do. Skiing and sledding can be found a short drive away.

Things to Do Near Holloman AFB

There are tons of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors with fishing, hiking, boating and recreation at nearby parks and mountain resorts. There are also fun annual events held locally like Sounds of Freedom, the Christmas tree lighting and the balloon invitational at White Sands. Fantastic restaurants, concerts in the park and special events can also be found in Alamogordo and just a little over an hour away in El Paso. Not to mention the recreation and entertainment options available on base thanks to the 49th Force Support Squadron.
